Departed the world as he lived it - strong, independent, loyal, memorable and occasionally contrarian. He grew up in Washington Heights NYC with the family that escaped Nazi Germany: father Adolph, mother Marga and older brother Vernon
His direction in life took him to the Community College of New York in the culinary trades. Following a three year military career highlighted by a stint in post-war Japan with a highly valued US dollar, he continued a career in restaurant management. A chance encounter on the Jersey shore with a young Swiss gal, Erna Spinnler led to matrimony in 1962. Career stops took the family to various New England locations and eventually Chapel Hill, NC where Herb managed the Holiday Inn for 15 years. In this college town he interacted with many prominent individuals in the fields of athletics, academia and politics. A career change led him the purchase Wellfleet Real Estate which he ran from 1991-2005. His retirement years were primarily split between Wellfleet and Siesta Key, FL and enjoyed a 17 year relationship with Elayne Weinbaum before her passing in 2022.
A consequential life occurence to mention is the effect of the Hepatitis B virus on the family taking son Tom in 1986 following a liver transplant and wife Erna in 2000.
He is survived by son Andrew and daughter-in-law Kimberly Brooks of Raleigh, NC, brother Vernon (AZ) and special thanks to caregivers and mostly friends, Beatriz Milhollan and Lileth Nesbet of the Cape,
His remains will be interred in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery with wife Erna and adjacent to son Tom. No memorial services have been planned at this time
