

John Richter, of Provincetown, Massachusetts, formerly of New York City, passed away on June 5, 2026, holding the hand of his devoted and loving wife Margaret “Margo” Richter. He was born on June 3, 1942, to the late Eva (nee Stiernspetz) and Sven Richter in Goteborg, Sweden. He was a generous and kind son, brother, husband, and father who always prioritized his family. He was unpredictable, adventurous, and fun-loving throughout his life.
Following World War II, his family emigrated from Sweden to Philadelphia, making their home in Springfield, Massachusetts. John and Margo married in 1970, having first met at as children, and moved to New York City. John and Margo raised their family on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, choosing Truro as their second home for decades before moving to Provincetown in 2021.
John was industrious from a very young age with a strong work ethic, working as a golf caddy and on a paper route as a boy. After attending Rollins College and working to put himself through American International College, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree, he started his career on Wall Street. He had a long and successful career in New York as an investment banker with firms including La Banque Arabe et Internationale d’Investissement and Merrill Lynch. He also developed a passion for travel, which continued throughout his lifetime.
In addition to his beloved wife Margo, John leaves his daughters Elisabeth Verde and Mary Richter (Dina Barker) and his grandson John “Jack” Verde. He also leaves his siblings - Bengt Richter, Susanne Moline, Lena Richter-Johansson and Thomas Richter - and several nieces and nephews. He will be missed greatly by extended family from Sweden, England, and the West Coast.
Calling hours in memory of John Richter will be on Sunday, June 14, from 5:00-7:00 pm at Nickerson Funeral Home in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. A service will be on Monday, June 15, at 10:00 am at the Church of St. Mary’s of the Harbor and burial will follow at Old North Cemetery, North Truro. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests that contributions be made to Sustainable Cape or Soup Kitchen of Provincetown (SKIP).
