Patricia M. Duarte

February 23, 1938October 8, 2018

Patricia M. Duarte, born 2/23/1938 in Truro, Cape Cod, MA died on 10/08/2018 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth, MA after a period of declining health. She was the daughter of Antone Duarte, Jr. and Marjorie Beckley Duarte, who both preceded her in death. Married twice, she was divorced from both husbands, preferring to remain independent and march to her own drummer. After graduation from Provincetown High School she studied interior design and architecture in Boston. While putting her first husband through UMASS Amherst she started working in an insurance and real estate company. The business was familiar as it was the same type of business as her father’s in Truro and Pat enjoyed it and excelled at it, ultimately earning her CIG Professional Designation. After her husband graduated from UMASS he wanted to return to Cape Cod and Pat then started to work for her father at the Duarte Agency in Truro. In time, she purchased the agency from her father, allowing him to retire in Florida. Her business became very successful and it was a busy time for Pat, both professionally and personally. She made many friends from many places while running her business. Pat contributed many hours to public service and served as Secretary and Chairman of the Town of Truro Planning Board for eleven years. She was Truro’s member of the Cape Cod Planning & Economic Development Commission, serving on the executive committee for four years. She was the Town of Truro’s Heart Association Chairman and the Director of the Cape Cod Chapter of the American Heart Association from 1963-1970. Pat was named the first female Director of the Independent Mutual Insurance Agents of New England, a 3,300 member professional association. In 1980, Pat sold the Duarte Agency, left Truro, remarried and moved to the Providence, Rhode Island area. During this time she started to work in the design business; ultimately renovating and rehabbing over 30 historic properties and commercial buildings in the USVI, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine and Florida over the past 40 years. Finding herself alone again in 1986 Pat moved to St. Thomas, USVI, where she lived for 16 years. She then moved to Rockport, Maine where she served as a member of the Rockport Planning Board, Rockport’s Comprehensive Planning and Capital Improvement Planning Committees and the Opera House Committee. She eventually settled in Port Clyde, Maine, while enjoying most of her winters in St. Augustine, Florida. Over the years Pat was very proud of being honored by the Marquis Who’s Who in American Women, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World publications. Pat’s true loves were her loyal dog Wolf, the sea, travelling, her Mercedes Benz, collecting art and renovating houses while awaiting the next adventure around the corner. Pat is survived by her brother Daniel Duarte of Truro, MA, her sister Joan Ohrn of Yarmouth Port, MA, her niece Marjorie McNamara and her nephews Michael McNamara and Christopher Ohrn. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes, Wellfleet, MA on October 20, 2018 at 10am, followed by a reception at the Montano’s Restaurant in Truro, Cape Cod MA.
