Born on April 07, 1937, in Hartford CT, Richard was the son of Henry Bramwell Gidman, an accountant for Hart Manufacturing, and Jane Victoria Gidman (Larson), an administrative assistant.
Richard graduated from Buckley High School in 1955, pursued higher education in architectural design, and went on to have a successful career in architecture and building. He spent time overseas in Germany, serving as an administrative officer in the United States Army. Especially fond of his time abroad, he often shared his memories and experiences with family and friends. He was proud to have earned his Eagle Scout status.
Richard married his best friend and love of his life, Marjorie Margaret Mary (Gresko) Gidman, on May 16, 1964, raised their family in Simsbury, CT and spent vacations on lower Cape Cod during the summers.
A house fire in 1993 at their Simsbury home led them to relocate full-time to their house on the Cape. Richard was immensely proud to have designed and built his home alongside his son, John. He enjoyed antiquing with Marjorie, with a love for antique China, and tending to their garden, including maintaining his bonsai trees. Richard had a continuing passion for birds that began during childhood. He also enjoyed work as a part time caretaker in their beautiful Twine Field Road neighborhood, preparing their homes so they too could enjoy the place he loved.
A man of many artistic talents, Richard was a skilled artist and painter, and along with his wife, was a member of the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill for many years. His proficiency with acrylic paints and pastels inspired his children and grandchildren to pursue their artistic passions. He was an avid Red Sox fan and fondly recounted seeing games with his mother and son at Fenway Park. He was fortunate to see his favorite player Ted Williams play.
Richard’s love extended to his family, especially his wife of 59 years, Marjorie. Richard was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Christina Gidman, and his loving wife Marjorie. Richard is survived by his children: Elizabeth Mary Gidman Bucken (Kevin) of Woodbine, GA; Laura Ann Gidman-Powers (David) of Andover, NH; and John Bramwell Gidman (Cheryl) of Simsbury, CT., and by his grandchildren Carter and Jarrett Bucken, Madison, Bailey, and Myles Powers, Summer and Zoë Gidman, along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Richard will be cremated, and a celebration of his life will be determined for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, 10 Meetinghouse Road, Truro, MA 02666 in Richard’s memory.
His witty and wry sense of humor, storytelling, and wisdom will be missed.
May he rest in peace, and may his memory live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
