David Chun Jea Lee

It is with deep love and remembrance that we announce the passing of David Chun Jea Lee, who left us peacefully at home on April 18, 2026, at the age of 90. He is survived by his beloved wife Nancy; his children Julie (Don), Wanda, Donna (Mark), Edward, and Richard; his grandchildren Derrick (Sabrina) , Vanessa, Samantha, Jonathan, Trevor, Siena, Rebecca, and Scarlet; and great-grandson Christopher, (Derrick)

David was born in China, at 14, he immigrated to Canada with his grandfather. They settled in Alberta, where he attended high school and worked for his grandfather’s laundry. In his 20’s, he returned to China and married the love of his life, Nancy Bik Woon Jean. Together they built a life grounded in hard work and sacrifice, first in Hamilton and later in Toronto, where they sought better opportunities for their children.

A versatile and entrepreneurial man, David owned a convenience store in his 20s before following his passion for food. He became a Master Butcher from George Brown College and worked at a large supermarket In Toronto. David built a career in the restaurant industry and opened two Chinese restaurants. He was the best Chinese food chef, he did everything himself—prepping, cooking, and deliveries—often alongside his staff and children.

David created great memories for his family. From his great cooking to family experiences, he created countless joyful memories with his children: BBQs at Wilket Creek Park, annual CNE trips (even from Hamilton), and baking together (pies and buns). He worked long hours to ensure his children had opportunities he did not, a goal he achieved as all five became university graduates with successful careers and families.

After retiring, David enjoyed time as a grandfather and the simple pleasures of life—eating out, cruises, casino trips, and street festivals with Nancy. He especially cherished the time with his first grandchildren, toddlers, Derrick and Vanessa. He loved being grandfather. At 67, he suffered a severe stroke that left him wheelchair-bound. But with remarkable strength and spirit, he continued to embrace life, finding joy in his weekly visits to his downtown program at Central Neighbourhood House, where he shared laughter, meals, and companionship with friends. David also loved his weekly outings to Scarborough Town Centre to share a meal with his wife Nancy.

David was a devoted husband and father who did everything to give his family a better life. The family extends special thanks to Donna for her devoted care

Thank you, Dad, for giving us so much more than you had. We will always remember your laughter, your wisdom, and your strength. Your mind remained sharp to the very end. We miss you deeply.

He will be forever loved and remembered.
