It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hans-Ruedi Glauser in his sleep at age 85 following a brief illness. Hans was born in Fribourg, Switzerland as the only child to Gottlieb and Johanna. After spending some of his earliest years high in the mountains around Thun, after having contracting TB, he grew up bi-lingual and with an enjoyment of camping together with bicycle trips and later photography. After completing studies in engineering, he travelled to the Netherlands to do an internship. Wanting to learn English he arranged to study in England and there in the same class he met his future wife Bertha who also happened to be also from Fribourg. Married in 1966, they decided to travel to Canada for their honeymoon and planned to stay only two years to improve their English. After 6 years and having two kids they returned back to Switzerland for a short time before returning back to Canada and making it their permanent home. Working initially at Dover and later at Armour and finally at Northern Elevator until retirement. Summers were interspersed with camping trips to Algonquin Park and even farther north to French River and Killarney provincial parks. Long time hobbies included the traditional stamp collecting and photography, where many hours were spent in the bathroom rolling B&W film. Once per year a fishing trip up north was organized with friends. Later in they bought some land near Penetanguishene and built a cottage where summer memories were made even better with the arrival of grandchildren Elizabeth and Audrey. Retirement allowed more time for theatre, concerts and travelling to warmer places. Many of their friends in Canada were also from Switzerland having initially met during the Swiss Club events around Toronto. Later on, he would step up and have an active role in the initial and all Kantonal events held in Kingston. He was a calm father, supportive husband, fantastic grandfather and always a friend. Throughout his life he was always up for a good joke, love of a good book, a chess game and always enjoyed photographing nature. Predeceased by his wife Bertha, Hans is survived by his daughter Claudia, son Adrian and daughter-in-law Susan, and grandchildren Elizabeth and Audrey. He will be missed by family and friends in both Canada and Switzerland.
