OBITUARY

Horst Hans Hueniken

January 28, 1930February 5, 2020

On Wednesday, February 5th, while on palliative care due to rapid decline from Parkinson’s Disease, Horst Hueniken passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Just moments preceding his passing, he had been visited by a caring neighbouring friend wherein the permission to ‘let go’ had been lovingly expressed. We are grateful for his gentle passing. Horst had developed a trusting friendship with his personal support worker(s) who tended to him daily and offered valued companionship throughout his months in hospital and nursing home care.

Horst is survived by his loving and doting wife, Gerda Hueniken, and his four adult children, Horst Eckhard, Henrike, Cornelius and Margarita Hueniken. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Alanah Wray, Katrina & Dominique Hueniken, Tyler and Caroline Huntress and his great-grandchild Rose Huntress. He also has many beloved nieces and nephews. His brother Joachim, also under longterm care for Parkinson’s, is his only surviving member of his family-of-origin. Both began their lives and married their lifetime partners in Germany.

Horst celebrated his 90th birthday only days before his passing in the presence of family. He graced us with smiles and his good-natured humour, as well as expressed his loving appreciation.

Horst was an active and hardworking man who enjoyed busying himself with ongoing projects of every kind. He could always be counted on to find ingenious ways to repair or rebuild something. This talent was also inherent within his many years of entrepreneurship as an industrial sewing machine mechanic. He especially enjoyed his time in nature during his loved cottaging lifestyle. His daily walks, wherever he was, almost always included amicable greetings and amiable chats with both neighbours and strangers. Horst’s bright smile and exuberant humour will be remembered by everyone.

A visitation for Horst will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2020, at the Giffen-Mack Funeral Home, 4115 Lawrence Avenue East, Scarborough, Ontario, from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. His memorial service will be held the following day, Sunday, February 16, 2020, at the Giffen-Mack Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m.

On behalf of Horst, flowers for the funeral service are appreciated yet for those who prefer donations, we are most honoured by your contribution to Parkinson’s Canada https://www.parkinson.ca/getinvolved/waystogive/. With sincere gratitude from the Hueniken Family.

Dear Gerda and Family;

It is with great sorrow that we read about your loss and wish you lots of strength and peace to each one of you.
Horst will always have a special place in our heart and memories.
We still remember the wonderful time we spend in 1988 as a newlywed couple. Horst and you, Gerda, where so supportive and a great guide for us at that time. He even got us our first job in Canada, the 1000 briefcases sewing project. Gilbert and I tackled it over the hot humid summer on your front porch with the wonderful help of Horst lending us one of the industrial Pfaff machines.
Also the wonderful memories on the weekend at your cabin, from which I had heard so much through Angelica my sister, are special.
We had many new things to learn being a young couple from Mexico, you both tought us how to figure out life in Canada. Thank you!

May Horst rest in peace and may you all find comfort in the wonderful memories he left behind and many lives he touched with his joy and helping hand while he walked his journey here on earth.

Our love and prayers sincerely,

Gilbert Sanchez and Christine Enkerlin with family.

Don and I will always remember our cheerful, sunny neighbour Horst. Over the last 50 years we were fortunate to see him pass our house almost daily as he enjoyed 'getting out' and enjoying the beautiful day. His later walks were determined workouts to get him 'back in shape' after many a hip or knee replacement. Horst loved to chat so we could keep up on his trips to the cottage and other 'doings and places. We already miss the joy he added to our neighbourhood!! love and hugs to a special guy Cathy and Don

Liebe Gerda, liebe Henrike, liebe Margarita, lieber Horst-Eckhard,

Horst had the best laugh ever! And he loved including everyone in the fun. He and Ossi revved each other to crazy levels. So we always knew there'd be rollicking family time with him in town. We will all need to step up to fill the void! Cheers for a great family man, and condolences to all!

As a very old friend of Henrike's from university, I will always remember when I first met her parents. They were both totally into eating very healthy and natural before it was a thing! I have since followed in their footsteps and have often thought of that moment. My condolences to the family. He lived a long and happy life and I am sure his presence will be missed.

My condolences to the entire family. Vati will be missed and I cherish the memory of his laugh and humor when telling the "motor in the attic" story.

Horst was my next door neighbour for over 40 years and he and Gerda and I shared a wonderful friendship. So many laughs to remember when we sat chatting on the back porch, I will always remember his sense of humour. Even though I moved away 2 years ago, I still stopped off occasionally to have a chat and a cup of tea, He was a wonderful neighbour and many times helped me out of a situation. Rest in peace dear friend.
