Passed away peacefully in hospital with family at his side on June 3, 2023, at 90 years old. John was born in Glenburn, Scotland, in 1932, lived in different countries in his early married years before settling in Toronto, Canada in 1971. He is predeceased by his wife, Mary Ann (nee Doolan), son Colin, brother Robert, and sister Susan. He is survived by his brothers Colin, Lawrence, Ronald, and sister Linda. He will be missed by his children, Mary Ann Swan (Jerry), Isabel Gilbert (Art), John (Tammy), and Michael. He will also be missed by his 6 grandchildren, Taylor, Emily (Daniel), Patrick, Colin, Isabella, Mackenzie, as well as extended family in Canada, the UK, and abroad.
John had a fulfilling career as a mining engineer and ultimately as a precious metals (diamonds) analyst, where he was regarded as an expert on the subject. In his school years at the Camborne School of Mines (CSM) in England, he was Chairman of the Student’s Committee, and Captain of the soccer team. He was loved by all his colleagues and classmates, and he kept in regular contact with them until his death.
Friends may call at the Giffen Mack Funeral Home, 4115 Lawrence Ave. East Scarborough, on Sunday from 2 - 6 p.m. Funeral Service in the Chapel on Monday, June 12, 2023 at 1 p.m. Cremation.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scarborough Health Network (SHN) Foundation, or to the Canadian Diabetes Association (Diabetes Canada), the latter of which honours our late mother, Maria. Dad always donated to this charity.
