I first came to know Karl when he started teaching in 1968. We opened a food services department at Maplewood High School. Karl operated his shop in a very organized and very productive way. Students appreciated his kidding and his sense of humour. He cared for his students and wanted the best for them. 
Karl and I worked well as a team, when I transferred as department head to another school in 1975, Karl left with me. We worked closely together there for over 20 years, Karl used to say that he and I spent more time together in a day than we spent with our wives. They were fun times.  Karl coached soccer and chaired the annual open house committee and raffle, selling more tickets than anyone else and encouraging his class to be the best sellers too. During “Careers week” Karl had students demonstrating  baking skills in a local mall. Christmas brought out Karl’s production skills. Students under his direction turned out hundreds of Christmas cakes and stollen, sold to raise funds for school activities. Karl was a true Canadian who loved Canada and what it allowed him to accomplish for himself and his family. He understood Canadian politics better than most. If you debated politics with Karl and opposed his staunch Conservative beliefs, you better be knowledgeable of the issues and have accurate facts. He did not suffer fools easily. His memory amazed me. He remembered more details that happened in your life than you did yourself. He was honest, fair and forthright. My good friend, he was cheeky, a tease, an instigator of practical jokes. His laughter and smile were infectious. I run into former students regularly. The first person they ask after is Dough Boy as he was affectionately called. Above all of this commitment to his teaching career, his family was always number one.  Some have found him to be gruff and antagonistic at times but those of us who knew him well, knew him to be a very sensitive man with a big heart.   He was loved by us all. He will be missed.

So sorry for your loss, Roger, Karin, Kyle, Nicole and Christina.   The pictures are a wonderful reminder of all the great times shared by our family. Everyone in our family is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of your father Karl.
Karl was not only a neighbour for over 50 years but we became family friends that shared both good and bad times.
Karl was always helpful, especially during the time of Klaus’s declining health.

We were saddened to hear about Karl's passing and wish to express our sympathy to Roger and the members of the family.  Our thoughts and prayers are for you at this time of personal loss.  We remember fondly time spent with Karl and Ann during many socials at their home as well as a holiday weekend we spent together in New York City.  Karl and I were colleagues at Maplewood High School in the 1970's.  He was a passionate and caring Food Services Teacher.  Great memories of those days.
