Eulogy for Maria Waugh, Funeral May 2, 2013
My mother was born Maria Pace-Asciak on January 15, 1936 in Sliema, Malta.  She adored her mother, Luigia who everyone called Leachia.  During her childhood Malta was under a siege because of its position in the Mediterranean as an important strategic port for the allies. This made the tiny island a target for constant air raids by the Axis and made housing and food scarce.  However, mom remembers that time as being a lot of fun.  She remembered playing with other kids, everyone in their nightgowns and pajamas, in the air raid shelters which were basically underground caves.  She loved being able to stay up late during the air raids – to her, a child it was just a big party.

All food was controlled by the government during her childhood but that didn't stop my mom and her brothers and sisters from sneaking into farmer's orchards and picking half-ripe fruit off the trees, sometimes being chased by the farmer and even his dog.  She told me once they were caught and they spoke only Italian to the farmer and pretended not to understand Maltese to get out of trouble.  She loved telling stories of her childhood and teenage years.  She used to laugh about playing fishing with her brother Wilf by using a string on a stick and then Wilf would put a leaf on the string and she'd say, “Look I caught a fish.”  She'd talk on the phone with her sister Sossie about the times when they would chase each other playing Herod.  The chaser was Herod and he was persecuting the others, the Christians, by chasing them to kill them.  They'd all run away from Herod screaming and laughing.  One of her favourite memories of childhood was about Easter when on Easter Sunday all the window coverings on the church windows were removed and light would flood into the church.  

At 15 she moved to London, England to begin a new life.  She became and elegant and sophisticated woman who, I think, resembled Sophia Lauren who my mother idolized.  She worked for many companies during her time in London including the originally poly-fila company.  She saw her mother leave London and happily return to her children in Canada where, shortly after, she passed away.  My mother adored her mother and missed her terribly.  But, she loved London and everything English, the food, the language, and eventually best man, George.  My mother and father actually met in Majorca, Spain on vacation.  They were married in London on October 28, 1966.  They came to Canada in 1967 so that my mother could be with her family who were already here.  At first they lived with her sister, Connie, but eventually moved into, what was at that time, the tallest residential building in North America.  My mother like to live life for the now and to the fullest. 
She always told me that what she wanted more than anything else in the world was a child.  I came along on January 30, 1969 and my glamorous mother cut her hair to an easily manageable length, cried as she cut all her nails down so she wouldn't poke my little touchy when she changed me, and instantly went from elegant socialite to “mommy”.   

Growing up she gave me everything she possibly could.  We went to Florida almost every year.  She loved Daytona Beach and tolerated Disney for me over and over again.  She loved going to the JaiAlai and Bingo and laying on the beach, always under the umbrella away from sun, smoking and reading a magazine.  When at home she worked for Consumers Gas and quickly rose through the ranks in only 6 months to becoming the Senior Clerk of her department.  My parents seemed to move a lot but we lived the majority of this period in Pickering with our little Pekingese dog, Champagne.  Also during this time my mom would have huge Figoli parties on Good Friday when my family from Brampton would all come over and make the Maltese Easter cookies called Figoli and the kids would decorate Easter eggs.  Then we'd have a meatless dinner, quite a feat to cook dinner without using any met when you, yourself, was allergic to any type of fish.  She also used to hold big Christmas Eve parties where my father would pretend to be Santa Claus and dress up to distribute gifts to all the kids.  We didn't know it was my dad pretending to be Santa Claus even though his costume was the worst red plastic bag sort of thing over his clothes with a cotton batton beard, but Michael, Corrine, Nadine, and the other little kids and I had no idea that this wasn't the REAL Santa.  She loved parties and entertaining and being with her family just playing Maltese rummy or “May I” or just laughing about old times.

In the 80s we moved to Oshawa to be closer to the theatre as we were all very involved in Oshawa & Whitby Little Theatres.  My mother loved to watch my father on stage, she was very proud of his acting and she would help herself in the background, making sandwiches or coffee and do props and other things.   During this period her beloved brother, Wilf, came to live with us for a year and then moved close by.  We would get together quite often and play cards and laugh, my mom loved it when he would try to sing old songs playing cards and get all the lyrics wrong.

Then work burned out my mother and she had her breakdown.  She didn't work after that and struggled with depression for the rest of her life.  At that time we decided to move from Oshawa back to Toronto so I would be closer to Centennial College where I would be going.  We moved to a triplex on Ellesmere and Birchmount where she did it up really nice, with a huge patio on top of a three car garage at the back.  She did up the patio with plants and flower boxes, which she loved, and used to enjoy sitting out there in the sun.  Then I met my husband, Rick, and life changed once again for us all.We moved to a beautiful condo at Bamburgh where I was when Rick and I were married in 1991.  Mom was very involved in all the planning for the wedding and wore a glamorous pink satin dress with a fully sequined pink jacket, and, of course, a matching pink hat and shoes.  My mother loved hats, shoes, and purses.  

Five years later my mother was thrilled at the birth of my daughter Sarah on May 1, 1996 (consequently the anniversary of her beloved mother's death).  Then, again she was delighted at the birth of my son David only one year later on May 10, 1997.  She said that she was shocked at how much she absolutely adored her grandchildren.  She knew she would love them but was surprised and how all-consuming that love and pride was.  They were truly the happiest parts of her life.  She spoke to her niece and best friend Luanne a few times a week spending hours telling her all about her grandchildren.

She was so proud of them.  My daughter's singing performances and my son's play performances and academic achievements filled her with pride.  They gave her great joy in spite of her growing kidney failure and eventual dialysis treatments.  As she grew more and more ill my father took wonderful care of her.  He did everything he possibly could for her.  He gave her everything she wanted, which can be proved by the number of handbags and hats in her closet.   It was important to her to look good, even when at dialysis.  She was the only person I ever saw in dialysis who went there in a full outfit with a matching hat, purse, nails, and shoes.  Miss Glamourpuss.  She also loved seeing my dog, Panda.  Panda gave her great comfort and she loved when he would come over and stay with them for a few days.  

I could go on and on about my mother all day because she was an amazing and complex person.  She loved her brothers Wilf and Pete, and her sisters Connie, Dorrie, Sossie, and Gemma and their families.  She loved her husband George, her son-in-law Rick, me, and especially her grandchildren Sarah and David.  She will live on through them and their future accomplishments and I know she will be watching them always.  I will miss calling her when I do the dishes or popping by for a toast and cup of tea on a Friday morning.  I love you and you will be missed.
