

Mercia loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals for her family, and the numerous children she cared for as a childcare provider. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren playing boardgames, various cards games and provided an environment that allowed everyone she cared for to develop lifelong relationships.
Mercia was predeceased by her parents, John and Purificao Abranches, husband Paul Joaquim Barbosa, siblings Stephen, Dolores, Anciette, Carmu, Vito, Timothea, Jerome, Gregory and beloved granddaughter Alison.
She will be lovingly remembered by her four children, Tica (Alu), Roque (Geraldine), Rolina (John) and Barbara; 11 grandchildren, Shaun, David, Caroline, Nina, Gregory, Stephen, Amanda, Ian, Tanya, Kyle and Naomi; 9 great-grandchildren, Madison, Zachary, Isabelle, Carson, Charlotte, Mia, Elspeth, Amelia and Evelyn; and sister, Aurora. She also leaves behind many other family members and friends.
A celebration of her life will take place with a viewing on Thursday, October 13 from 4 to 8 p.m., at Giffen-Mack Funeral Home, 4115 Lawrence Ave East, Scarborough.
The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 15 at 11:00 a.m., at St. Joseph’s Parish, 200 Morrish Rd, Scarborough, followed by a burial at Christ the King Cemetery, 7770 Steeles Ave. East. The family would like to extend thanks to all those who cared for Mercia over the years, including a special thank-you to Oren and Parvin for their years of dedicated care and to the teams at Spectrum and the Tony Stacey Centre for Veterans Care, for their compassionate care in Mercia’s final days.
