I have know Steve for about 20 years; met him at the 1st Wine club meeting that we went to, and immediately liked his friendly and pleasant nature.
I guess our friendship really started, when in his usual off-hand way he said that "for a Brit, your not bad", and I replied, " that, you are quite a nice Colonial" After that we became very good friends and buddies at golf. I always rode shot gun (simply because as a driver, I almost overturned the cart and frightened the living daylights out of Steve).
As someone has said Steve presented a tough exterior, but was extremely gentle inside and had a lot of caring and consideration for others.
Our golf games with Keith  Bill & Terry, although regular, were days of joking laughter and a lot of fun. I have had many a great day with Steve up at Beaverton to have dinner with his friends there, and to spend a night on his boat, and a game of golf the next day.
Also with our friends Keith and "Buffalo Joe" we had 3 good trips to N. Carolina.
Also we all had a vacation to a friends manor in France, and poor Hewitt's baggage got lost, meaning Steve had to spend the entire vacation in cheap shorts and t-shirts, and borrowed cloths.
He never really got upset about it, just took it in stride, as was his way.
He did make me laugh at a golf club in the states. We were checking in and the guy on the desk asked who I was playing with: I pointed at Steve and said "he is my partner", whereupon, in some panic, Steve said "I am definitely not his partner, no way, I am just playing golf with him".

Steve, Andrea and I always valued your friendship, and you will never be forgotten.



How can I follow all that had already been said ?
I first met Steve as a founder member of the Swine club - and over the years, gradually got to know the decent, caring person and human being that he was.
I shall miss him greatly, and I would give so much to play just one more round of golf with him.
At times, he has advised me, and his wisdom and good counsel have always been so accurate and welcome.
At our wine tasting and social get togethers, his quiet smile and good humour shone through.
A much valued friend has been lost to me. I greatly miss the man

Steve was our man - he kept us up to date with all the latest stories and jokes.  He made up our  foursome of golf and booked all our T-off times.   His very  last golf game shown in the picture was Steve getting his very first hole -in-one  on the 14th Hole of Four Seasons Golf Course and shown holding his ball that he retrieved and his certificate -  no drinks that day due to COVID - you owe us a drink Steve.  He was a great friend to all who knew him.  He and Faye were part of the original West Hill Swiner’s  Club .  You always had a smile on your face and all of us in the Swiner’s Club will miss you so much.  We always had so much fun at our Wine Tastings and our many trips together.  So glad we were able to spend time together in February of this year.  Our memories of that day at Bill & Viv’s will be cherished.                                                                                                   

Steve you will be sadly missed by Keith, John and Bill on the golf course  weekly and sadly missed by all your friends from  our Swiner’s  Club (now a social club).  Next time we are all together we will raise a glass and toast you in a celebration of your life.

Stephen always reminded me of big John but he was more like Pauline.   He had a soft heart, an acerbic sense of humour and a big laugh accompanied by a twinkle in his eye!!  Steve never failed to bring that to every event.  We did not get much opportunity to see him and the family much after his sister Pat passed away,  weddings and funerals mostly, but Steve always managed to leave a meaningful impression.  My condolences to Faye, Kenny, Robyn and Phil.  Rest peaceful Stephen.  

We moved  onto Broadbridge Drive along the same time as Steve and Faye .  It was a fairly new and large community and having kids the same age going to the same school was one way for people to meet.  I am not sure this is how they met, but I know that shortly after we moved in Steve and Faye were instant friends with my mom and dad and were a presence in my life for many many years!  My condolences to all of you, Faye (Mrs. Hewitt), Kenny and Philip.  


My memories of Uncle Steve will always be connected with the Sturgeon lake cottage.  He taught me how to water ski using a wooden board on the back of the tin boat and never turned us down for a boot around the lake.  Will miss him dearly especially this summer on the dock. Love, Paul

Dad LOVED to play golf. Here is a photo of his first hole in one to cap off the last game of the season last year! 

Charlie and Ellie both loved spending time with Papa and we have so many great memories to share.  When visiting us in Midland, we would take Nana and Papa to our favourite waterfront restaurant where ice cream was an after dinner treat.  Steve could sit quietly, enjoy a beer and conversation while watching the boats in Midland Harbour. Although he has been taken too soon, we're grateful for the time that we had together. I will definitely miss Steve's sense of humour at family events! He always kept me laughing and entertained. Such a wonderful guy. My condolences to the whole family and sending much love.

Steve was a cherished friend for over 50 years.  We had several wonderful memorable trips together with lots of laughter.  A true lifelong friend who will always be in our hearts.  Our sincere condolences to Faye, Ken & Robyn and Phil at this time.  

After some thought, Uncle Steve is akin to a soft boiled egg: hard on the outside but soft on the inside.  Our family often shares stories of him throwing us in the lake at the cottage at the crack of dawn to teach us to water ski or, in my case, learn to swim.  These acts, while sounding like hard lessons, were completely out of love for his nephews and sons as he always wanted us to succeed at these sports and life skills and would offer us his time and effort without question.  Uncle Steve was very sarcastic, and would always have a great quip during conversations together.  His favourite terms he used with me were “you’re nuts” or “don’t be stupid” – terms I often now share with my boys.  One fond memory I have is that I asked his son, my cousin, Ken to write my boater exam for me before the testing was to become much more difficult…Kenny proceeded to fail the exam and called on his dad to write it for me instead…Uncle Steve passed with flying colours and proceeded to question whether Kenny was in fact his son after failing what he felt was the easiest boater exam.  After presumably telling Kenny “you’re nuts” for failing the exam, he called me and told me “don’t be stupid” with my newly minted boater license.  Words to live by.  I’ll miss you Uncle Steve, especially if there ever comes a day that I’ll have to take my own boater exam.  Much love, Johnny.

A humerous memory of Steve.
For a number of years, I played golf with Steve, John Thursby and Keith Paine, and we had a lot of good times. 
At our golf games Steve was the only one of us that put his initials on his golf balls, originally it was an SH and then later he shortened it to the letter S.
We used to enjoy plenty of laughs and jokes during our games.
I remember one day telling Steve that I had come across a new brand of golf balls at steeply discounted prices available at Canadian Tire. "They have hundreds and hundreds of them I said".
Steve of course was interested to know more and asked what brand they were.
I told him that they are all balls that people have found in the ponds, rivers, bushes and roughs at the golf courses in our area, and that they all have the letter S written on them !
That was one of our many laughs for the day !

Steve welcomed me into the Hewitt family in 1970 or so, by offering to drive me to the family cottage in his flashy yellow Mustang convertible.  As we drove along winding Hwy 36, he suddenly pulled over to the side of the road and said, "You take it from here."  I was nervous, but managed to keep the car on the road until we reached the cottage.  I appreciated his gesture enough that I remember it 50 years later.  I married his sister Pat, who sadly died 20 years ago.  In our family, Steve has three nephews and six grand-nephews.   Steve was an honest man.
It wasn't easy to find a photo of him from long ago, but he's in the attached family picture.

Marlene and I remembered the good time when Steve and Faye had their boat in Beaverton. He loved golfing. On occasion, I played the odd round of golf. ( I was not a good as Steve)
 
We will miss his jokes he sent to us over the internet.

Steve was a great friend & neighbour for over 20 years. His love of family, good humour & golf stand out in our minds. He will be missed by many, many people.

Steve was a good and gentle friend for more than a half century, a person of warmth,  intelligence, a great sense of humour, and a welcome addition to any gathering.

Although he didn't mind putting you on. 

I remember hitchhiking to his parents' cottage as teenagers one warm summer night. Out first ride let us out on a bridge over a railway line. There was a freight going under with open coal cars.

"Let's jump it," Steve said, "we'll ride the rails to the cottage."

"We'll never make it," I said," seriously buying in to his tongue in cheek suggestion, "it's going too fast."

"Yeah," he said, laughing at the thought, "but imagine how great it would feel if we did. We'd live forever."

He left us too soon. 

I think of him daily and though I miss him more than I could ever have imagined, I remember our friendship and I smile.




My oldest and best friend since grade 3 !  Great memories. over 65 years of friendship.  We were like brothers as kids…Thanks Steve for being a great friend!
