A native New Yorker, he worked for many years as a foreman in a print shop in lower Manhattan. He worked a second job driving a taxi cab on the weekends. Bill “retired” and then continued to work at Alberstons after moving to Florida with Diane in the mid 1990s.
Bill proudly served his country as a Marine and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima where he received a Purple Heart. His experience as a Marine shaped much of his adult life. He later became involved with the Jewish War Veterans organization, ultimately becoming the commander of his post in the Bronx.
Bill is survived by his son Bob Schaefer and daughter Amy Schaefer Martinez (husband Chuck); stepsons Mark (wife Kristin), Ken (wife Marilyn), Eric (wife Gail); grandchildren, Emily Martinez, Lily Martinez, Sarah Schaefer, Rachel Schaefer, Jordan Olson, Joshua Lieberman, Ellis Lieberman, Mallory Lieberman, Rebecca Wolfson (husband Justin), Rachael Lieberman, Bari Lieberman, Stacy Arriola (husband Austin); great grandchildren, Arden Buchmann and Adelyn Arriola; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Diane, son Larry Schaefer, and eleven brothers and sisters.
The funeral service will be held at IJ Morris Star of David Cemetery of the Palm Beaches, 9321 Memorial Park Rd, West Palm Beach, FL 33412 on Friday February 21, 2020 at 2:30pm. Internment will directly follow the service at the cemetery.
Memorial Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. or Trustbridge Foundation.
