Born and raised in Peabody, Bernie had a lifelong passion for sports, excelling in both football and hockey. He attended Brewster Academy before continuing his education at the University of New Hampshire (UNH). His leadership skills were evident early on, eventually serving as captain in the U.S. Army, a role he carried with honor and dedication.
After his service, Bernie built a successful career as a territory manager at Amoco, where his hard work and integrity earned him the respect of colleagues and clients alike. Upon retirement, he and his beloved wife, JoAnn, moved to Florida, where he enjoyed the sunshine, good friends, and serving on the board of his cooperative community.
Above all, Bernie was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was the proud father of William, Steven, and the late Janice Richards Coburn, cherishing every moment spent with his family. He will be remembered for his kindness, his unwavering love for those around him, and the strong values he instilled in his children and grandchildren.
Bernie was predeceased by his beloved wife JoAnn and daughter Janice. He leaves behind his brother Alfred Richards, his sons William and Steven, grandchildren, extended family, and many dear friends. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who knew him.
A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Get Your Rear in Gear, which funds programs for colon cancer screening, research, education and awareness, and patient support. This charity was dear to him and his family as he lost his daughter to colon cancer.
