Larry was born in June 1930 in Brooklyn, NY. His family loved hearing stories of his early years in Brooklyn, taking the subway to Yankee games in the Bronx and to the Coney Island beach, where he got a job as a teen selling ice-cream on the beach. Larry was a standout football player at Madison High School, earning a football scholarship to Arkansas State College. They are probably still talking in Jonesboro, Arkansas about Larry stepping off the train on a hot summer day in the summer of 1949 wearing a sharkskin suit, with blue suede shoes along with his thick Brooklyn accent. Unfortunately his football career ended prematurely due to an injury in his freshman year. He missed a trip to the coveted Refrigerator Bowl.
Larry returned to Brooklyn where he worked a number of jobs including retail and office jobs in Manhattan and that of a busboy and waiter at Catskill Mountain Resorts in upstate New York, and a summer camp counselor.
In 1952 in the midst of the Korean War Larry enlisted in the Army. After completing basic training he was selected for leadership school. After completing leadership school Larry was selected for Officer Candidates School in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Following six tough months Larry was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant Armor Officer and Tank Commander. By the time he was commissioned the Korean War was winding down. Larry was stationed at Camp Polk, Louisiana.
Larry developed a lifetime love of country music while living in the south. His children have fond memories of Dad singing Hank Williams songs, his favorite being Hey, Good Looking.
After completing his military service Larry returned to Brooklyn where he utilized the GI Bill to complete his college education at the City College of New York.
On June 1, 1957, while attending college, Larry met the love of his life, the former Iris Lurie. The couple became engaged after only 2 months, and were married on January 24, 1959. Their three children Bruce, Janet and Richard were a product of their loving marriage. The close knit family eventually moved to Staten Island.
Larry was an avid New York Giants football fan. He had two sets of season tickets. He never took anyone other than his children to the Giants games. His children cherished the alone time with their amazing father.
As a grandfather Larry was adored by his three grandchildren who will always remember his love for them and fun times together.
Larry was very well respected in the field of commercial insurance, and was particularly proud of his tenure at Warner Communications. After retiring to Florida, Larry enjoyed part time employment with Iris at the Coral Sky Amphitheatre. He also worked at a local dinette store, assembling furniture. Larry became certified as a Master Gardener, using his skills to cultivate a beautiful home garden. Larry loved bowling and playing tennis, especially with Iris. They competed in bowling leagues together for many years. Larry also volunteered at the Royal Palm Beach Police Department, where he responded to home alarms and worked traffic details.
In retirement, Iris and Larry lived in Florida for many years before moving to North Carolina to be close to their son Richard and his wife Dina. Iris and Larry eventually returned to Florida to be close to their son Bruce and his wife Andrea.
Larry’s passing has left a hole in the hearts of those who love him. He will be with us always.
