We have come here to celebrate the life of Stella Olive Porter. Stella was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad on June 2, 1921 and transitioned on Thursday October 26, 2017, after having blessed us with her loving presence for 96 years. She was the wife of Arthur Porter, to whom she was married for 72 years, the daughter of Harold and Muriel Harris, sister of Carlton Harris, Herman “Babsie” Harris and Harold Charles Harris all of whom have predeceased her with the exception of Harold Charles. Stella was the mother of four children, Anthony Porter, Dr. Alston Michael Porter, Olive Balbosa and Ayleen Luke. She had eight grandchildren, Dr. Amina White, Dr. Simone Porter, Safiya Porter, Dr. Aiysha Balbosa-Toliver, Karima Porter-Alexander, Anson Porter, Amber Balbosa and Shakeel Luke and was the great grandmother of Malachi Roberts, Camryn Porter and Zahara Toliver.
Stella was a very loving and caring person, she dedicated her life to her family and their circle of friends who frequented their home. In her early years in Morvant, Trinidad, she headed a private school and provided a good educational foundation to many neighborhood children. In addition, she was an accomplished hairdresser with a steady clientele. Stella was an excellent cook and hosted Thanksgiving dinners for many years both in Brooklyn, N.Y. and Bronx N.Y. for family and friends and continued the tradition after moving to Florida. Stella was known by many for her specialties such as Dhalpouri Roti, Bussupshut and Sweetbread.
She was a very religious person who was always engaged in the practice of her faith. Stella will be sadly missed by all those who knew her and will most definitely leave a void in the hearts and minds of her dearly beloved family and friends. We take comfort as we contemplate the exemplary life she led, and the legacy of love and caring for humankind that she leaves in her wake. May God in his goodness have mercy upon Stella and may she rest forever in peace in His Kingdom.
