1929-2020
Delphine Theresa (Giras) Jarnot, 91, passed away peacefully, on April 28, 2020, in Ann Arbor MI. Born and raised in Buffalo, she was the daughter of Sophia M. (Kozminski) Giras and Frank J.Giras. She was the wife of the late Walter J. Jarnot for 64 years and they raised a family of five children. Del and Walter met on a blind date and started out their lives together in Washington, D.C. when Walter was a student at Georgetown University. After many moves throughout New York State and Massachusetts they finally settled in Ann Arbor MI. All during that time, Del worked as a professional hairdresser following in the foot steps of her father. She had a long diverse career running her own shop and then creating a hairstylist house-call service for people who were home bound. Del had many clients who considered her a dear friend.
In the 1980’s through 2008, Del was an active member of The Friends of Poland, a non-profit organization that was co-founded by her husband, Walter. The organization collected and distributed medical texts, supplies and refurbished ambulances to Poland. She was a devoted member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Ann Arbor MI. Together with her husband they were volunteers in prison ministries in Ann Arbor MI and Cape Cod MA, helping people to make a difference in their lives by sharing the hope of the teachings of the church.
Instilled with a love of creativity in all its forms, Del encouraged drawing, an attention to detail and an appreciation of different perspectives to those around her. She was innovative with school projects, and made costumes by reinventing found objects. She loved listening to music and dancing the polka. At Christmas time, she spent hours making cookies and sending them to family and friends.
Del was known for her generous spirit but also was known as “Buffalo tough” working and volunteering well into her 80’s. Her belief in life was to help others, do the right thing, make sure family came first and be grateful to God. She was a person to be counted on to lend a hand when needed, acting from the heart, thinking of others, and doing what is necessary, no matter how difficult.
Delphine is survived by her five loving children and their spouses, Ellen (Jeffrey) Osborn, Joe (Dee) Jarnot, Lee Anne (John) Shaheen, Charles (Paula) Jarnot, Sharon (William Sullivan) Jarnot, Cherished grandmother to Leif (Amy) Ragnaldsen, Jarrett (Melissa) Osborn, Audra (David) Sitarek, Deanne (Aaron) Stachowski, Angela (Jason) Rupp, Anna (Anthony Cucculelli) Shaheen, Ellen Shaheen, Molly (Ryan Maynard) Shaheen, Joseph (Jaclyn) Shaheen, Walter Daniel Jarnot, Catherine Jarnot, Stuart (Lacy Hoobler) Jarnot, Charles Elijah Jarnot, fifteen wonderful great-grandchildren and many loving cousins, In-laws, nieces and nephews.
