Evelyn Maurer Behr was born on February 12, 1921 on Mill Street in Buffalo, NY. Evelyn and her six siblings along with her parents moved to Eggertsville shortly after she was born. She attended St. Benedict Grammar School, Sacred Heart Academy and graduated from Amherst High School.
Evelyn met Adam Behr at a dance and convert when she was twenty years old. Adam was born and raised in Munich, Germany and came to the United States when he was seventeen. He learned the trade of a tool and die maker and was quite proficient by the time he came to our country. Evelyn and Adam had a mutual love of German music and enjoyed going to concerts together.
Evelyn and Adam were married for forty-six years and had two sons- Martin and Matthew. Evelyn is a grandmother to four and a great-grandmother to three. Evelyn said she and her husband always “worked together” whether it was indoor or outdoor jobs. They also had a mutual respect for each other and these two factors made their marriage a strong one. They enjoyed taking their sons camping and were active in scouts.
During WWII, Evelyn worked at Curtiss Wright. She also worked in a dental lab for nineteen years and as a customer representative at Dydee Wash. She enjoyed bowling, sewing, knitting, crocheting, baking and especially cooking. “I always enjoyed trying new recipes for family and friends,” she recalls.
In 1972 Adam and Evelyn traveled to Europe and vacationed in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. They got to experience a true German Oktoberfest and all of that wonderful German music and food! Evelyn always wanted to travel across the United States and at age eighty had the opportunity to do so with her son, Matthew. Some of her favorite places she visited were the Grand Canyon, San Diego and Yosemite. She traveled across our country in an RV not once, but two times experiencing the north route and the southern route.
In February, Evelyn turned 103 and says she attributes her longevity to eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables!
