

Nancy Jane Wright (née Roeser) of Buffalo, New York, passed away unexpectedly on July 29, 2025, while in Woodstown, New Jersey. Visitation will be held at Hoy Funeral Home (3855 Seneca St., West Seneca) on Saturday, August 9 from 5-8PM. A funeral service will be held Sunday, August 10 at 1:30PM at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church (3512 Clinton St., West Seneca). Born in Buffalo on March 29, 1948, Nancy lived a life defined by love, service, and dedication to others. Nancy was predeceased by her husband, Douglas Wright; her sister, Suzanne Williams (and husband Bill); and her parents, Herbert and Loretta Roeser. She is survived by her loving partner, Nils Tonning; her son, Gregory Wright, and his wife Beth, along with their children Michael and Chasie; and her daughter, Kimberly Schultz, and her husband Kevin, with their children Zachary and Madelyn. Nancy was a devoted and joyful grandmother, known for her unwavering support and willingness to play Uno or put together a puzzle with only a moment’s notice.
A proud graduate of West Seneca High School (Class of 1966), Nancy earned her degree in education from Buffalo State University in 1970. She devoted her career to teaching elementary school in the Buffalo Public School System, retiring in 2006 from Campus West Elementary School after more than three decades of inspiring young minds with compassion and care.
An award-winning gardener and talented baker, Nancy found joy in cultivating beauty and sharing it with others. She was especially known for her extraordinary pies - beloved by family, friends, and anyone lucky enough to enjoy a slice. She passed down her love of baking and treasured recipes to her children and grandchildren, creating lasting traditions and memories. She was also a skilled knitter, often crafting thoughtful gifts for loved ones and those in need.
Nancy and Nils shared a deep love of the natural world. Together, they regularly explored new places, finding peace and wonder in the beauty of nature, from bike rides along the Inner Harbor in Buffalo to picnics on the New Jersey shore.
Nancy was a lifelong member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in West Seneca, where her faith and fellowship enriched her life and those around her. She sang in the church choir and served faithfully, including on the prayer chain committee, offering comfort and connection through her voice and her prayers.
Nancy was most happy when surrounded by family. Whether attending Doster family reunions or gathering with her and Nils’ extended families, she cherished those moments of connection and laughter.
Nancy will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will continue to bloom in the hearts of those she touched.
