Arta was born at home in Glenwood, Sevier, Utah January 18, 1932, to Clayburn Hendrickson and Zelma Peterson. She loved her family which included six siblings; two brothers and four sisters. They were happy and worked together to sustain the family. She spent most of her childhood in Glenwood on the family farm where she helped the family with chores. One of her favorite things was taking the cows from the barn on the mile-long walk to their pasture. She also enjoyed caring for the chickens, collecting fresh eggs and delivering them to the mercantile to be sold. She loved her black dog, who was her faithful and constant companion.
Her father died when she was 9½, which brought challenges to the family who now had to work harder to stay together. She went with her mother, brother and sister to Washington state for a visit with her oldest sister and her husband. While there her mother was hired to work at the sawmill so they resided in Washington for four years. She returned to Glenwood and lived with her brother Chub in the family home while attending Richfield High School. After graduating in 1950 she made a return visit to Washington where she was offered a job and decided to stay.
On June 14, 1953, Arta met the love of her life when she boarded the #9 bus with Andy Coy as the bus driver. They dated for a short period, marrying on July 23, 1953 in Seattle, Washington. Arta became an instant mother as Andy had two beautiful daughters, Starr and Mavis. Three years after their marriage they added Candi and eighteen months later Lee joined the family. The family was sealed in the Idaho Falls, Idaho temple, on April 23, 1966.
After working for an additional 2 years to help with the down payment on a home; Arta became a stay-at-home mother, which she loved. During this time, she also served in church callings in Primary, Relief Society and Young Women’s. Serving in the church was a daily activity for her, she loved the people especially the girls in the Young Women Organization, who became her her lifelong friends. When the Seattle Temple was dedicated, she became a temple worker where she served for many years.
Arta was a lifelong learner. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles. She loved to sew, cook and quilt. She taught herself calligraphy and cake decorating she learned many things in Relief Society homemaking meetings. She was also a 60-year member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, having known many original pioneers in Glenwood and often referred to them as “her people”.
During retirement they loved visiting and serving in temples at home and on their travels, visiting 60+ temples. In 1995 Arta and Andy served in the Mississippi, Jackson Mission where they prepared documents for micro-filming.
Arta and Andy loved to travel, visiting Europe, Israel, Canada and Mexico as well as other spots across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. Arta has lived in the Salt Lake Valley for 20 years and has made many wonderful friends in her Villa View neighborhood and the church members of the Harman Ward.
She loved her family above all. We will miss the joy and humor she found in life and shared so willingly.
Arta is survived by her daughters Starr Irvin, Surprise Arizona; Candi (Randy) Christ, Heber City, Utah; and daughter-in-law Linda Coy, Orem UT; 17 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren.
