She was born June 28, 1930 in Ogden, UT to Cordon H. and Claudia McCune Thompson. She married her eternal companion William A. Wait on February 6, 1952, solemnized February 26, 1954 in Mesa, AZ.
Betty was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully for over 60 years as a visiting teacher and various callings such as; Relief Society President, Young Women President, and frequently as camp director. She was a former Captain and Chaplain of Daughters of Utah Pioneers and Docent of Pioneer Memorial Museum. Betty enjoyed family history research and served in the past as president of the McCune Family Association and of the Paxman Family Association.
Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother was a loving woman of faith, hope, and charity. She wrote weekly letters to her sons and grandsons on their missions. She spent decades knitting and crocheting hats, mittens, slippers, and afghans for family and church humanitarian aid efforts.
We remember mom skydiving at age 75, enjoying balloon rides, air plane glider trips, horseback riding, camping, hiking and swimming with grandchildren.
Mom loved Christmas and celebrating the birth of our Savior by giving gifts, baking special cookies, and always having special homemade candy for the grandchildren. Crafts, painting, baking, and travel were her joys while humming to herself as she found joy in the journey and enduring to the end as memory faded.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and infant daughter; Alicia.
She is survived by her children; Steven W. (Connie Brunson) Wait, Laurene (Chris) Brown, Denise (Allen) Rice, Karen (W. Steven) Shumway, Mark T. (Marla Edwards) Wait, and Alona (David) Boberg. 23 grandchildren and 51 great grandchildren.
We thank all staff of Legacy House Assisted Living in Taylorsville, UT for their kind service to our mom.
