David Earl Walker, age 83, of West Valley City, Utah passed from this life Tuesday, September 28, 2021.
Born in Twin Falls, Idaho, June 1, 1938 to Earl and Noma Walker. He was the second of three children. He grew up on a small acreage in Jerome, Idaho and attended Twin Falls High School.
After high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as a radar technician in the 54th fighter interceptor squadron at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota between 1957 and 1960. They were awarded the best squadron world-wide in 1959. After an honorable discharge he eventually moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho where he met the love of his life, Charleen Jensen and they were married on January 27, 1968. They moved to Utah in 1970, where he began employment with the University of Utah. He was employed there until his retirement in 2001.
He was a member of the Olympus male chorus and enjoyed travelling with them. He served one year as their Vice President and one year as the President. He was a member of the Utah Public Employees Association and served them as the chairman of the higher education district for the state of Utah and as a representative for the University of Utah. He spent several years coaching baseball, basketball, and soccer. He volunteered at the Harmon Senior Recreation Center and as a range officer at the Lee Kay Public Shooting Center. He was a Varsity Scout leader and was involved for many years in leadership training. He loved attending Wood Badge and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver award – a distinguished recognition bestowed upon those who have given continued, unselfish, and effective service to the community.
David had a larger-than-life presence and a great sense of humor. He loved to make those around him laugh in an effort to brighten their day. He enjoyed spending time with his family and enjoyed many camping, hunting, and fishing trips with them. He adored his grandsons and loved helping them restore model boats and talking with them about trains, ships, and airplanes.
He is survived by his wife, Charleen; son Chad David Walker (Jennifer); his two grandchildren Teagan and Brody; and his sister Janet Mabbutt (Jon). He is preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Noma Walker; and his brother Edwin Walker, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and many other loved ones.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 4, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Valley View Funeral Home, 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley City, Utah 84120. A viewing will be held one-hour prior on the same day at the same location. Interment to follow services at Valley View Memorial Park.
