On February 11, 1962, Dirk Joachim Jelitto began his journey on Earth. First steps led to sprints across soccer fields and high mountain treks. A photograph stopped him in his tracks and led him to the love of his life, Kimberly Alder, and they married December 23, 1983. He found heaven on earth in the family they built together. His wife and children, Dirk, Nickolas, Danielle, Allyson and Annabell were his life’s passion. Dirk worked for Salt Lake County at the Acord Ice Center and Salt Lake City at the Gallivan Center where his impeccable attention to detail, patience and care made him an invaluable resource. He was the ice expert, and perfected each of the dozen or so layers, some of them as thin as 1/32 of an inch, so that his hockey playing sons and the community would be as safe as possible on his ice. When not working to support his family, he was with his family. His kids were his interests, so their interests became his. He was the leader and organizer of family trips, no unexcused absences allowed, and most recently loved being with them at his desert “Blue Sage.” His extensive research of the outdoors and the geographical layout of the land took him to untouched lakes and spectacular views. He could take a perfect photo in one shot, and his talent for photography captured the magnificent scenery he found on his mountain journeys. Dirk passed on to explore yet another breathtaking trail on February 26, 2014. His legacy is continued by his parents, Joachim K.W. Jelitto and Gerda Isolde Baumgard; siblings, Carmen Jelitto, Kimi Sampson, Michele Jelitto and Tina Overgaard; children, Dirk (Katie), Nickolas (Jeaniece), Danielle, Allyson, Annabell; countless co-workers, friends, hockey lovers, fishermen, wildlife enthusiasts, nieces, nephews, sister and brother-in-laws; and his cherished best friend, kung fu companion, and soul mate, Kimberly.

A “Life is Good” celebration in Dirk’s honor will be held on Sunday, March 2nd, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Gallivan Center upstairs banquet room, 50 East 200 South in Salt Lake City. All are welcome to share in this special day! In lieu of flowers, please make a donation at any America First Credit Union to Dirk’s dream, “Blue Sage”.

Dear Jelitto family, How many ice rinks have we sat in together, watching our kids play this game on the ice. How many practices did we sit in? Even that was a family affair not just the games. Our little girls running around the rink. Visiting with and making life long hockey family friends. Our hearts break for your family, May God wrap his loving arms around you. What a beautiful family you have.
Love, Taryn and Lori Culverwell
