On March 13, 2024, Elna Marie Day Whittaker, attended and cared for by her daughters, passed in comfort at her West Valley home from this mortal realm to a joyous reception in the hereafter. Born on April 21st 1927, the year of Lindbergh’s historic solo flight, to parents Joseph Ray Day and Pearl Marie Phelps, she was the firstborn of four raised on the family farm in Bountiful, Utah where she graduated from Davis High in 1946. Her marriage in the Salt Lake Temple to forever partner Ross Whittaker in 1949 lasted 72 years and produced seven children,11 grand, 22 great, and 2 great-great descendants to date.
Preceded in death by her husband Ross, son Brian and daughter Cheryl. Survived by sister Loretta, sons David (Sherri), Dennis (Connie), and daughters Lynnette Deluyck, Holly Marquardson (Fred), Susan Windley, son-in-law Patrick Kruger and daughter-in-law Sandy Whittaker. Elna will be remembered and eternally loved as a devoted mother, friend, and wife as well as a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was known and revered for her kindness, graciousness and good humor even in the face of physical infirmities associated with her advanced age.
Always a superb cook who provided her family with countless savory meals and regular Sunday and holiday dinners, mother Elna took up painting in later life when the demands of caring for seven children abated as they matured and afforded more time for herself. A score of these prized works of art she created decorate her home and many others.
We acknowledge and appreciate the dedicated caregivers who provided loving assistance and companionship over the past 30 months: Lola, Mele, Lini, Tui, Kristye, Lisa, Diana, and Enhabit Hospice. It should be noted that Elna’s family was there every day to give love, presence, and care. To the end her mind was sharp, her mood cheerful and reassuring. You are a wonderful mother whom we will always love dearly.
Until we meet again
The funeral service and celebration of Elna’s life will take place Saturday March 23rd 1pm with a viewing one hour prior at the LDS church 2850 W 3835 S. WVC Utah.
