Our dear dad Fred Murphey III passed peacefully, surrounded by his daughters,September 3rd, 2015, in Salt Lake City of causes incident to age and Alzheimer's disease. Fred was born on January 23rd, 1927, in Butte, Montana, to Fred Murphey Jr.
and Charlotte Buenther. Raised by a single mother in Salt Lake City, Fred graduated early from East High School and enlisted in the Merchant Marines. He then served in the Navy where he made lifelong friends. After World War II, he attended the University of Utah on the G.I. Bill. During that time, his life changed forever when the city boy met Marietta Jensen, a girl from the country. Fred always said that the day he married her was the happiest day of his life. The same month that their first daughter was born, Fred graduated from the University of Utah and began a 36-year career at Mountain Fuel Supply Co. (now Questar Gas). Fred and Marietta spent fifty-one years together and raised three daughters. Fred was a kind and generous human being. He taught his children and grandchildren respect for everyone and, thanks to his example, we learned what strength of character truly means. Fred had a wry and witty sense of humor. He was a proud University of Utah alumni and a member of the Crimson Club. He enjoyed football, basketball, and gymnastics. Fred was a man who didn't like to be the center of attention, and he would blush at the tributes we write here in his memory. Fred is survived by his loving daughters: Kathleen (Richard) Schockmel, Logan; Marsha Murphey, Salt Lake City; and Charlene (Marc) Wangsgard, Park City; his incredible grandchildren Arika Schockmel (Christopher Glade); Nicholas Schockmel; Cameron Wangsgard; Brooke Wangsgard; and his adored great-granddaughter Charlotte Rose Schockmel-Glade. Also survived by his sister, Marilyn White Kirkpatrick, Stockton, CA. Fred is proceeded in death by his parents; his step-father, Barr W. Smedley; his dear wife, Marietta; son-in-law, Richard Schockmel; and his loyal companion and dog, Karma. The family would like to thank Fred's excellent caregivers and staff at Sunrise Senior Living Center at Holladay and Comfort Worx Hospice, especially Mike. A memorial service will be held for Fred on Wednesday, September 9th, at 11:00 am, with a viewing from 10-10:45 am at Valley View Funeral Home, 4335 W. 4100 S., West Valley City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fred's name to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes
