Hazel Leona Sherwood Rogers passed away peacefully on September 11, 2021, just 1 week after her 91st birthday. Hazel was born on September 5th 1930 to Martin and Laura Sherwood. As a girl living in Minersville, Utah she wrote:
“I like to go to Sunday School and Primary and do good to everyone, and I also like to live on a farm and milk cows and ride my saddle horses and be a cowgirl.”
She loved farm life but always wanted more for her own family.
On November 19th, 1949 Hazel married her sweetheart Royal Jay Rogers (Jay). Together they had 4 children Larry (Eileen), Janet (Dahl), Alan (Diane), and Mark (Julie). They had 16 grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren. Quite a legacy.
She is preceded in death by her parents and 6 siblings. 1 brother (Jim) and 5 sisters (Nora, Rhoda, Mable, Eva and Donna).
Hazel was known by many names; Mom, Grandma Hazel, Grandma Rogers, Grandma Tootsie and Great Grandma Tootsie, mostly due to the endless supply of Tootsie Rolls she handed out to the great grandchildren. She loved her family and never tired of bragging about each and every one of them. She had a way of making every grandchild feel special as if they were each her “favorite”. She was so proud of her family.
Hazel worked very hard to provide for her family. Managing a Wonder Bread store for many years meant there were always an abundance of goodies at Grandmas house, that she proudly shared. She was a Halloween favorite because she handed out Twinkies and Ding Dongs to all the trick-or-treaters. She was an excellent cook and always made sure there was plenty for all. Her recipe collection is a legacy in and of itself.
Hazel was always a lot of fun, playing with the kids, dancing around the living room or cooking to her favorite songs. It cannot go unmentioned that Hazel was quite fiery, and competitive. She loved a good game night, bowling, horseshoes, Indian leg wrestling, or game of HORSE in the front yard. She loved to win and if she beat you, you bet she’d be able to tell you the exact score, and she’d remember for 20+ years! She was an avid Utah Jazz fan and really loved to give pointers to Jerry Sloan or Quin Snyder on their coaching through the TV. She always enjoyed visits from family and walks to the mailbox. We all became accustomed to hearing her famous tagline “love you much” as we’d call or visit. You were always welcomed with a “Hi Precious”, “Hi Sweetie” and she was always sure to tell you she loved you.
We love you so much mom, Grandma, Great Grandma Tootsie, as you would say; “You’ll never know how much”.
We invite any of you to help us celebrate Hazel. Services will be held at Valley View Memorial Park 4335 W 4100 S West Valley City, UT on Thursday September 16th, 2021. There will be a viewing from 12:45 pm, followed by a graveside service at 2:00pm. Family and Friends can gather and share memories of Hazel at luncheon following the graveside service.
