Jacqueline “Jackie” Kauilani Kalama Maynard, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by family on September 26, 2026, in West Valley City, Utah.
Jackie was born on October 8, 1939, in Nānākuli, Hawaii to William Kaai Kalama and Virginia Hamau Nawaa. She was the twelfth of thirteen children in the Kalama family. Rooted in a profound love for her Hawaiian heritage, music, singing, and hula became central to her identity from early childhood.
Jackie graduated from Waipahu High School in 1957. She then continued on to receive her Associate of Arts degree in 1959 from the Church College of Hawaii, and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1961 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Jackie began her career as an elementary school teacher in 1961 and retired from the Granite School District in 2003. During her career, she taught multiple subjects such as history, guitar, and English as a Second Language. She taught students of all ages.
Jackie met Lyle James Maynard at Brigham Young University after Lyle returned from serving as a missionary in the Hawaiian Islands. They were married on March 4, 1962, and sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on May 27, 1963. Together they have three children: Synthia Ann, NaLani LaNell, and Michael James.
Jackie was always an active and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had a strong and unwavering testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel, and she sought throughout her life to follow the Savior’s example of love, service, forgiveness, and compassion. This desire to serve and help others was primarily expressed through her talents. Her beautiful voice and love of music eventually led her to serve as a musical missionary in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in 1972. Throughout most of her 20-year tenure, she held the unique honor of being the only Hawaiian member. She traveled extensively with the Choir, visiting Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, and throughout the United States. As a proud ambassador of Hawaiian culture, her experience came full circle when she was featured as a soloist during the Choir’s 1988 tour of Hawaii, New Zealand, and Australia.
Years later, her missionary service continued when she had the opportunity to serve alongside her husband. Jackie and Lyle were blessed to serve two missions together for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They served their first mission in Anaheim, California (2004-2005), followed by a second mission in Peoria, Illinois (2008-2009). They also completed two service missions: one at the Utah State Correctional Facility and another at the Salt Lake Community College Institute. Jackie treasured these experiences, and they beautifully reflected her sincere desire to share the blessings of the gospel with others.
Jackie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lyle James Maynard, her parents, and ten siblings. Jackie is survived by her daughters, Synthia Ann Lambert (Frederick) and NaLani LaNell Holt (Richard), and son, Michael James Maynard (Julianna). She is also survived by her sisters, Pearl Leimomi Stevens and Rosella Puanani Kalama-Akiona. She has 14 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly. She was a devoted and generous grandmother, and spent the majority of her later years attending their games, concerts, and graduations, and frequently checked in on them via texts, calls, and social media.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the medical staff and teams at Intermountain Medical Center, Meadow Peak Rehabilitation, and True North Home Health and Hospice. Your attentiveness and care for our Mom and Grandma were very much appreciated.
