Jim was born on June 6, 1936, in Helper, Utah, to Harold and Jane (Perry) Lombardi. His family moved from Helper to Salt Lake City around 1944. He graduated from West High School. Jim worked for the Rio Grande and Union Pacific railroads for 43 years, retiring in 1998. Jim married his soul mate, Barbara Taylor, in Elko, Nevada, in 1956. Together, they raised three daughters: Debbie, Karen, and Lisa.
Jim had a passion for sports. He especially enjoyed watching the New York Yankees and Notre Dame football. He didn’t just watch sports, he bowled for 25 years with Barbara in the Rio Grande and Fun Lover bowling leagues and he golfed with his buddies, skied, and fished. After retiring, Jim spent time traveling the world with Barbara. His most memorable trip was to Dublin, Ireland, to watch Notre Dame beat Navy. While doing all of this, Jim still found time to volunteer for 12 years at Pioneer/Jordan Valley West Hospital. Above everything, though, Jim loved spending time with his family; they meant more than the world to him.
Jim is survived by Barbara, his wife of 64 years; his three daughters, Debbie (Owen) Biddle, Karen (George) Lombardi-Velez, and Lisa (Mike) Hassett; five grandchildren, Tony Biddle, Kory (James) Walker, Mikayla McCauley, Emma Hassett, and Minako Ono. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to thank the Huntsman Cancer Institute and Huntsman at Home, with particular thanks to Dr. Neeraj Agerwal, Wendy, Kathleen, Alina, Madi, Angela, and Edith for the compassionate care he received. Gratitude, also, to Reverends Jan Bednarz and Dominic Briese and Raylene from St. Martin de Porres for their support and comfort.
