On September 11, 2020, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, John William Maddocks, 77, returned to the loving arms of his Heavenly Father where he will be reunited with loved ones who have been waiting for his return.

John was born August 3, 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah to John E. and Almeda Maddocks. He married Linda Lorraine Ellsworth on April 5, 1969 in Elko, Nevada. He and his wife and children were later sealed in the Jordan River Temple on September 28, 2007.

They have four children: Justin (Emily) Maddocks, Toni (Daniel) van der Wekken, Jed (Suzanne) Maddocks and Tracie (Todd) Gillis. They also have 13 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. John attended Cyprus High School in Magna, Utah and later earned an Associate of Science degree from SLCC. John served in the US Army then continued to work for the military at Tooele Army Depot from which he retired after 30 years. After his retirement he worked for UTA for 10 years. He served faithfully in many capacities within his church.

John was a hardworking man, who put his all into everything he did. He was practical and would fix things instead of buying new ones. He was tough as nails but had a huge warm smile and was always willing to help friends and family. He enjoyed his garden and spending time caring for his property. He was always teaching his children in whatever he was doing. He was serious but teased a lot, it was often hard to tell if he was joking. He always showed love to everyone that came into his home. He was fiercely loyal to his family. He will be remembered and missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.

John was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Lorraine Courtright and Susan Rasmussen. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, sister Karyn (Rick) Evertsen, brothers, Michael (Bonnie) Maddocks, Bruce (Sarah) Maddocks and Kenneth Maddocks.

Funeral service will be held Friday, September 18, 2020, 2 p.m., at the Valley View Funeral Home 4335 W 4100 S, West Valley City. Friends may call Thursday evening at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. and 1 hour prior to service. Interment at Valley View Cemetery.

Due to current Covid restrictions the funeral service will be for family only.

Linda, Justin, Toni, Jed, Tracie,
I was so sorry to hear about John's passing. He was a wonderful husband and father, as well as a dear friend. I loved him from the minute I met him. He always had a smile and a hug for me. He welcomed me into the family when I married Larmer, no questions asked. I loved it when we would stop by or came for a family get together, he had to show us the yard, maybe it was something new they had planted or plans for an update. He loved his yard. Life happens and we didn't see each other much after Larmer died, but you have always been there in my thoughts and heart. John, you will be missed. I'm sorry I can't be there with you today, but please know you are loved and in my thoughts and prayers.
Love, Aunt Toni

John and Linda and your children have been an integral piece of our family. Although we’ve been gone from the ward for years, it seems like only days when we see each other. You’ve always had a way of making us feel loved and special. We love you and we were so saddened to hear of John’s passing.

I remember so much kindness and generosity given to me and everyone else from my uncle Bill. I remember playing basketball with all my uncles at grandma's house when we were so much younger. I remember his beautiful flowers and gardens that he cared for with loving hands. I remember his kind care for my mother when she needed it the most. I remember so so many black walnuts. I still have his recipe for Bill's Dills. My favorite dill pickle canning recipe. His smile, love, sense of humor and kindness will be dearly missed. I send all my love to Linda and his family. I pray Jesus will wrap you tightly in his comforting arms. Love, Penny

Our fond memories of John are always of him together with Linda, and often with other family members as well. He always made eye contact and seemed calm, engaged, interested. We enjoyed his fun, gentle sense of humor. He was a great supporter of each member of his family. We are fortunate to have known him. Our love and prayers go out to Linda and to all the extended family.

This kind man and his wonderful wife always opened their home to me--and raised four of finest people to walk the earth. Some of my favorite memories occurred under his roof. I am proud to have known John. To his dear family: I love you all. And I am so sorry for your loss.
