On the evening of Wednesday, January 12, 2022, Katharine (Kay) Elizabeth Kirton Colledge passed away peacefully in her home with her family by her side. Mom was born on February 26, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Ruth Neerings Kirton and Frank B. Kirton. She was raised in Sugarhouse and Kearns, Utah, and graduated from Granger High School in 1962. On June 4, 1962, mom married our dad, Daryl Glen Colledge, in the Salt Lake City Temple and together they were blessed with 2 daughters and 5 sons. Mom was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints holding various church callings throughout her life. She worked at the Salt Lake and Jordan River Temples and retired after 22 years of service. Though mom’s health would limit her ability to attend church services, she never lost her belief in the Lord. Mom had a strong testimony and knew she would be reunited with her loved ones.
Mom was a selfless, kind, and loving mother who doted on her children and was always concerned about their wellbeing. She was tasked with many challenges throughout her life but conquered them all with grace and humility. Mom was a selfless person who would give anything she had for the comfort of those less fortunate. Her compassion was unwavering as she welcomed anyone into her home if they were in need and, although she lived by modest means, there was always a warm meal for anyone who was hungry. Mom always put other’s needs before her own and never expected recognition. She was the unsung hero of our home, and we firmly believe that mom has been rewarded for her sacrifices and faith for there is no mother more worthy than ours.
Mom also instilled a love of all things Elvis into her children and made sure that we all knew the words to his songs. Mom could make a gourmet meal out of anything in her kitchen, could whip up a casserole worthy of a 5-star restaurant, and it wouldn’t be a proper family get together without her famous vegetable dip! When mom could spare a few minutes for herself, she could be found crocheting blankets for grandchildren or creating Christmas crafts for family and friends. Mom absolutely adored her grandchildren, and she was so proud of all of them.
Mom fought with all of her might to beat the devastating effects of Primary Myelofibrosis and Leukemia but in losing this fight, she was joyfully welcomed into the loving arms of her husband, Daryl, eldest son Frank, her mother Ruth, and her sister Darlene. Mom is survived by her children: John, Nina, Blaine, Keith (Kim), Shane, and Shari (Bob); grandchildren: Jonathon, Landon, Sean, McKayla, Joshua, Brittany, Keaton, Domanic, Breann, Savannah, Cedrick, Sam, and Nadia; great grandchildren: Conner, McKenzie, Lydia, and Weston.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at the Kearns 10th ward meeting house located at 5025 W. 4865 S., Kearns, Utah, 84118. There will be a viewing from 10-11:45 a.m. Saturday morning with the funeral program to follow at 12:00 p.m. Mom will be laid to rest with her husband Daryl and son, Frank, at Valley View Memorial Park located at 4400 W. 4100 S.
Our family would like to thank the staff of Harmony Hospice, especially Jamie, RN, who responded to our urgent request for comfort care for our mother. Your quick and compassionate care ensured that our mother was able to pass with the comfort and dignity she deserved. We would also like to thank Dr. William Nibley and his staff at Utah Cancer Specialists for his diligent care and support of our family during mom’s illness. A special thank you also to Elder and Sister Warner and Elder and Sister Ward for their visits to our mother and for the care and compassion they have shown for our brother, Blaine. And finally, thank you to Clyde Gleave for the care and assistance you provided to our mother and brother when we were unavailable. Mom loved you like a son.
