Koye Campbell Fleming, 75, our loving mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on March 10, 2018. She was born May 5, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Mildred Brown Campbell Stockslager and Serge Lang Campbell.
She attended East High School, where she was active in dance and performed in the school musical. After graduation, Koye became a top model for Michelle's Models and often sat atop the 24th of July floats. She competed in many beauty contests and was runner-up in the Salt Lake County Fair Sweetheart Competition.
Koye was married to Rex Hugh Harrison (later divorced); Larry Luther Benner (later divorced), with whom she had two children, Stacey Paige Benner and Steven Benner; and Martin Wright Fleming (deceased).
Koye worked for the telephone company in SLC, did receptionist work in California, and went on to become a realtor in Salt Lake. Her most important job came later on when she helped raise her grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Her later years were spent attending her granddaughters’ dance performances, cheerleading/drill competitions, and graduations, always supporting their dreams and aspirations.
She loved the Winter Olympics, shopping through QVC and HSN, Karl Malone, and vanilla ice cream, but she loved being a mother and grandmother the most. She documented important people and events through photos, although she had a knack for accidentally cropping out the tops of people’s heads—even after she received her first digital camera. She was a packrat by nature and saved the even smallest mementos from special events. Koye never made it anywhere on time but always showed up whenever she was needed.
She is survived by her two children, Stacey Paige Benner Pratt and Steven Larry Benner (Kari); her half-sisters, Cynthia Allen Ellis (Clair), Wendy Campbell Richardson, and Michelle Campbell Petersen; her half-brother, Michael Campbell; her three granddaughters, Dominique Nicole Lives, Danielle Rae Patrick (Casey), and Jaydin Olivia Pratt; and her dog, Coco.
Koye was preceded in death by her loving husband, Martin Fleming; her parents, Mildred Brown Campbell Stockslager and Serge Lang Campbell; her stepfather, Bruce Clyde Allen; her sister, Pamela Campbell Miller; and her half-sisters, Lori Campbell Butterfield and Robin Campbell Shorr.
A viewing will be held Saturday, March 17, at Valley View Funeral Home from 1:00-1:45 pm. The service will begin at 2:00 pm, with the dedication of the grave to follow directly after.
