She graduated from Kensington High School in 1953. After high school, she attended Peirce College of Business and attained her associate's degree in business administration.
Over her career, Lorraine worked in various industries. She helped many start-up companies get off the ground. She loved working in various areas of real estate; in fact, she passed along that passion to her children. She was always highly sought after in any work environment she entered, but her first priority was always her family and tending to their needs, thus why she insisted on temporary work assignments. Plus, she loved the new challenge and a chance to broaden her skill sets.
She was actively involved in various callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She always loved a challenge and an opportunity to serve in her church. Her callings ranged from primary teacher, ward Relief Society president, to Family History Consultant. Visiting and serving others was so much a part of who she was that she jumped at any and all opportunities to cook a meal, visit the sick, clean, or whatever was needed. One of her favorite things to do was serve alongside her beloved husband, Rod Erling. They went home teaching together for many years. They served a service mission at the Wyoming Branch of Philadelphia, PA. Another opportunity arose to serve when they were called as YSA advisors. Many of these callings allowed them many opportunities to serve together and open up their home and hearts to all they met in these callings.
She was the quintessential mother. Even though she did not get much time with her birth mom, she grew to be an amazing mother to her own birth children and to all those she would later adopt as her family. All who crossed her path felt her genuine and unconditional love. She had a passion for cooking. This hobby led her to open her home to many friends, family, and strangers who would soon become family. Lorraine was one of the most selfless individuals on this earth, even until her passing.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Edythe Mae Thompson; stepmother, Jesse Linvall Kunkel; father, Wilfred Paul Kunkel; and various other relatives.
She is survived by her husband, Rod Erling; Dale Erling (son) and Shannon Erling (daughter-in-law), Donna Erling Jay (daughter) and Marc Jay (son-in-law), Dawn Erling (daughter) and grandchildren Jake Erling, Nathan Erling, Rachel Erling, Sarah Erling, Josh Erling, and many other dearly loved adopted family members.
The family would like to thank her amazing and very loving caregivers over the last few years. Special thanks to Heather, Cheyenne, Monica, Ashlyn, Marian, Seth, Ben, and many others who stepped in to help with her care. We are immensely thankful for the care and compassion you showed our dear mother.
