Margarita Méndez (also known to many as “Mamá”, “Margo”, “Suegra”, “Mamá Margarita”, “Abuelita”, “Viejita”, “Grandma” and her favorite “Yaya”), passed away peacefully on September 4, 2020, just three months shy of her 90th birthday. Margarita was surrounded by her life’s most precious treasures, her three daughters, at her home in Kearns, Utah.
Margarita was an only child born to Domingo Méndez and Cornelia Pérez on December 4, 1930 in San Pedro Perulapán, Cuscatlán, El Salvador. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and loving friend.
Margarita was a dedicated mother who in spite of life's challenges committed her life to raising her three daughters Miriam, Cristi and Mónica. Her greatest desire was for each of them to be happy and accomplished with good men by their sides. Margarita worked tirelessly and endured a lot of hardships to provide opportunities for her family, through it all she learned and taught the importance of hard work and perseverance.
Margarita had a beautiful spirit and jovial personality and was very compassionate and caring. She loved everyone she met and she always made everyone feel special by providing them a sweet candy and her sweet smile. Though she only had 12 grandchildren, many considered Margarita their adoptive grandmother, their “Abuelita.”
Margarita was baptized in 1965 and though she did not push a handcart, she was a pioneer in her family and was among the first faithful members of El Salvador. She remained true to the gospel and her testimony of Jesus Christ until the end. She always taught her daughters and grandchildren the importance of tithing and serving others. To this day the children she taught as a teacher and as primary president still hold fond memories of her. She held precious memories of her mission service for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as a Service Missionary in Salt Lake City, Utah and as a Temple Worker in the Caracas, Venezuela Temple. Margarita was well-known for her giving heart and love for others. She loved dedicating her time and resources to the church.
Her warm caring spirit, contagious smile and wonderful legacy will live on through her daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and through those who adopted her as “Abuelita.” Margarita is survived by her daughters Miriam Reyes, Cristi Evans, and Mónica (Jorge) Calderón; her grandchildren: Mario Méndez, Yanira Reyes, William (Ángela) Reyes, Roxana (Rolando) Daza, Mónica Evans, Eric Evans, Jessica (Keith) Ashurst, Margaret (Chris) Harmatuk, Nathaniel Evans, Melissa (Vinicio) Reynosa, Sasha (Danny) Torres, and Jonathan Calderóón; her 33 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Margarita is preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Clara Luz, her sisters (María del Carmen, Teresa, Inés, and Ana); and her sons-in-law Michael Evans & Carlos Reyes. We know she’s enjoying a sweet reunion with them, and especially rejoice in knowing she gets to finally meet her mother and reunite with her daughter.
