Phillip Matta Castillo

In 1977, Phil married the love of his life, Loretta Castillo. Together, they built a beautiful life, raised two wonderful children, and shared 48 years of loving marriage. Phil was a devoted family man whose greatest joy came from spending time with his wife and supporting his grandkids in all their sports and activities. He was always there, cheering them on—proud, present, and full of love.

A proud Utah Utes fan, Phil never missed a game. He enjoyed watching Western and war movies and was known for his great sense of humor. He had a love for peanuts, Mexican music and Mexican food, and a deep appreciation for a good cup of coffee—always a priority in his day. He also enjoyed the occasional shot of Crown. One of his favorite traditions at weddings and parties was dancing to “The Wedding March,” a moment that always brought him joy and held a special place in his heart.

Phillip is survived by his loving wife, Loretta; his children, Lonnie (Jenna) Castillo and Raquel (Jose) Zizumbo; his grandchildren, Izais, Santi, Eliana, and Dario; and his siblings, Ernest (Jennifer) Castillo, Francis (Jim) Fish, Vicky (Luis) Zaiter, Andrew (Kat) Castillo, and Tony (Sandy) Castillo. He is also lovingly remembered by the Pina family, Garcia family, Neilsen family, and all his cousins and nieces and nephews, who will forever cherish the memories, laughter, and love he shared so generously.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Agapito and Eva Castillo, brother-in-law, Chuck Melini, and family friend, Pete Neilsen.

He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

A Rosary will be held on Monday, August 11th, from 6:00-7:00pm with a viewing to follow until 8:00 PM at Valley View Mortuary (4335 W 4100 S, West Valley). A funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, August 12th, at 10:00 AM at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church (3560 W 3650 S, West Valley, UT), with a luncheon to follow at the church.

In honor of Phil’s love for the Utah Utes, guests are welcome to wear a piece of Utes attire to the service if they wish.
