1936-2023
Richard Halterman Crane, 87, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather returned to his heavenly father on June 25, 2023 in Taylorsville, Utah. He was born on May 14, 1936 in his grandmother’s maternity hospital in Provo, Utah to Clair Burdette (“C.B.”) Crane and Marie Halterman Crane. He graduated from Piute High School in Circleville, Utah and married his high school sweetheart Ivy Lorraine Gleave in the St. George LDS Temple on November 5, 1954 and she became his wife of nearly 69 years. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many callings throughout his life.
Living and working in various towns in his beloved southern Utah with his sweetheart Ivy, they started their family and were blessed with three wonderful children. Kenneth Richard Crane (deceased), Candace Lorraine Crane Karpakis and Shawn Burdette Crane. He often spoke of his time as a cook at Bryce Canyon which began his love of cooking. They spent many wonderful years in southern Utah but he eventually moved the family to the “big city” when he was offered a job at Hercules. A new life began and they built and settled in their current home in West Valley City.
Richard moved up the corporate ladder while attending Steven Henagar’s College and several Dale Carnegie courses. He finished his career retiring from Associated Food Stores as a General Merchandise Specialist after 31 years. He was a very hard worker but knew how to have fun and joke around. He especially loved it when people asked if he was the singer Burl Ives whom he uncannily resembled. He taught his children the joy of the mountains and lakes through his love of camping, fishing and hunting which continued into his early 80’s. In addition to his outdoor interests, he loved to “tinker” in his garage building things, cooking, yard work, reading and waiting for hot homemade cookies from his daughter or building and flying his remote control airplanes with his son. He was quick with a joke or story and relished in the company of others. He had many adventures and travels with his sweetheart, family and later in life with many friends as their senior tours took them on many fun adventures around the western United States. He valued his family, friends and sweetheart Ivy above all else.
Richard served in many civic and church callings. In southern Utah he was the Beaver City Fire Chief and President of the Jaycee’s organization. He was an active priesthood member serving his church members and involved in the Boy Scouts organization. He served his father in heaven, family and community well.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife Ivy Lorraine Gleave Crane and two of his three children: Candace Lorraine Crane Karpakis (James), South Jordan and Shawn Burdette Crane (Jan), Gunnison. Eight Grandchildren and 16 Great Grandchildren. Siblings William Marion Crane (Georgia), Syracuse and Kathryn Crane Esplin, Flagstaff, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Kenneth Richard Crane, brother David Burdette Crane (Evelyn), brother Charles Stevens Crane (Deanna), and brother-in-law Roger Esplin.
