Born on May 25, 1937, in Beaver, Utah, Richard was the son of Rellis Van Petty and Julia Hunt Petty.
After graduating from high school, Richard joined the United States Air Force, proudly serving his country. His assignments took him across the nation, but it was Alaska that captured his heart and remained his favorite station throughout his military career. Following his service in the military, Richard answered the call to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Texas. He later married the love of his life, Karen on January 10, 1980, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They built a life full of adventure, and enduring companionship. Karen will miss him deeply, as will all who knew him.
A man of many passions, Richard had a lifelong love for classic cars—his prized possession being a 1951 Lincoln. He was also an avid rock hound, always on the lookout for geological treasures.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Karen and brother, Ronald Petty. He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Susan Johnson and Brenda Destafano; many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Graveside service for Richard will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at 10:00 am at the West Jordan City Cemetery, 7925 S 1300 W, West Jordan, UT.
