

Husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Robert J. Defa lost a five-year battle with cancer on March 7th at age of 73. Born in 1949 to Mary and Joseph Defa, Robert was a lifelong resident of Hunter.
A man of high integrity, Robert learned the value of hard work and discipline early in life, committing much of his time helping on the family farm. Those traits were with him to the end.
Robert graduated Cyprus High Class of 68’. He served in the U.S. Army departing for Vietnam in Oct ‘69. He was a proud veteran and never forgot those who didn’t come home.
Robert’s career began at Kennecott’s rail car shop, followed by 30 years at Salt Lake Airport, retiring in 2014. His positive influence on co-workers is legendary.
An expert welder, Robert was well known for his fabrication skills. He never hesitated to use his many talents to help family and friends. He enjoyed his workshop, spending later years creating projects, making repairs. He cherished his classic cars and derived pleasure from the conversations and reunions had at car shows.
Robert’s gate was always open. He had a compassionate ear and always made you feel welcome. Phone calls or visits, he liked to listen and catch up on the events of others. He leaves a void for the many people who always had Robert to lean on.
Robert is survived by his wife Nancy of 51 years, sons Robby, Jack and Shawn Kooyman Brothers Richard (Robin) Defa, Ray (Pat) Defa. Grandchildren, Shauntae Kooyman, Jessica Faber (Devin), Sam Defa, Sebastian Defa.
A Celebration of Robert’s life will be held Monday, March 13th, at Valley View Funeral Home 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley City, UT 84120 from 6 pm to 8 pm. Services will be Tuesday 14th at Valley View Funeral Home 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Interment to follow at Valley View Memorial Park 4400 West 4100 South, West Valley City, UT 84120.
