Layton, UT - Sherrie Shoell peacefully passed away on April 1, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born Sherrie Ann Butterfield on August 31, 1949, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Wallace Rulon Butterfield and Juanita Pierce Butterfield, she grew up in Salt Lake City and Cottonwood Heights, Utah, with her brother R. James Butterfield and sister Christine Maire Butterfield Martin. Sherrie greatly admired her parents for their dedication to God and faith in Jesus Christ, and she also had a strong testimony of our Savior, Jesus Christ. She quietly served in numerous callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including as a historian and temple worker in the Jordan River and Oquirrh Mountain temples.
Sherrie graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1967 and moved to Provo to seek work and be with friends. However, she was unable to find employment and returned home. A neighbor suggested that she apply to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for a job. Sherrie called the personnel office and secured an interview. That interview led to 31 years of employment with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, working in the Primary General Board offices and the Office of the President from 1970 onward. During that time, Sherrie served with grace and professionalism as a secretary to many leaders within the Office of the President.
Sherrie found love later in life when she and David Shoell began dating in the summer of 1991. They lived in the same stake and her older brother Jim was good friends with David. They were soon engaged on September 11, 1991, and married in the Salt Lake Temple on December 13, 1991. They spent 34 wonderful years as companions throughout life and created a beautiful, blended family with David’s four adult children and Sherrie’s two nieces, whom she regarded as her daughters. Sherrie was also a kind and generous aunt to her other nieces and nephews as well as to the many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who would join the family in later years.
Together, Sherrie and David create many memorable family traditions of Sunday dinners, Easter egg hunts, and the annual December 23rd holiday party with the entire extended, blended family. Sherrie’s love for gift-giving was evident with the delightful Christmas stockings that she prepared each Christmas for all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Sherrie is survived by her husband, David Fisher Shoell, and his children: Stephen Shoell (Dayna), Kimberly Love (Corey), Colin Shoell, and Adrienne Shoell. She is also survived by her dear nieces, Angie Hunter (Kris) and Jenny Jex (Larry), as well as her brother, R. James Butterfield (Barbara), her sister, Christine Marie Butterfield Martin, and her other nephews, nieces, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Grandma Sherrie.” She will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her father, Wallace Rulon Butterfield, her mother, Juanita Pierce Butterfield, her niece Amy Lynn Martin, and her grand-niece, Ainslee Butterfield.
Funeral services honoring Sherrie will be held on Monday, April 7th at 12:00 pm at the Butler 10th Ward Chapel, 6634 South Greenfield Way (1800 East), Cottonwood Heights, UT 84121. A viewing will be held on Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Valley View Mortuary, 4335 W 4100 S, West Valley City, UT 84120, and before the funeral services at the Butler 10th Ward Chapel from 10:30 - 11:30 am.
