Theral Franklin Smith

April 29, 1939May 12, 2018

Theral Franklin Smith "Munchkin" passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 12, 2018.

Born April 29, 1939 in Tremonton Utah to James S Smith and Rebecca King. Theral attended Bear River High School and was on the swim team. Theral served an LDS Mission in South Africa where he learned to love the culture and the people. He was a very spiritual person and held various callings in the LDS church. He had 3 children with his first wife: Charmaine (Tom), Cameron (Alicia) and Jason (Carrie). Later he married Helen on May 22, 1993, where he gained 5 children, Jayelyn (Jim), Karl (Valerie), Waid (Paulette), Trina (Alan) and Lori (Joel). He loved square dancing, which is where he met his “sweetpea”, Helen. They’ve been inseparable for 25 years. They loved going on cruises together. He always looked forward to their next adventure. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including attending the Smith Family Reunion and taking them for rides in his dune buggy. He enjoyed Dutch oven cooking for his family and friends, watching Western movies, reading non-fiction books and was a huge history buff. He was also an avid journal keeper. He was a hard worker and liked to keep busy, which showed since he retired 3 times. He was proud of his 38 years of service in the Federal Government where he was a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. He worked as a Fork Lift Operator for Sun Products. He had his CDL and drove numerous vehicles for work including an armored truck for Wells Fargo and Le Bus. Theral will be remembered for his patience, smile, sense of humor, sense of adventure and how he could roll with whatever life threw his way without complaint.

Theral is survived by his wife Helen, their eight children, 22 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and his 8 siblings.

The viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 16th from 6-8 pm at the LDS chapel located at 3305 Scottsdale Dr. West Valley City, Utah. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 17th at 11:00 am at the same location where friends and family may visit one hour prior to the service. Please visit Theral’s extended obituary at
