Ty was born on Aug. 8, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Tawannee (Ty) and Alora Atwood Kolb…alongside his twin sister making him the youngest of three children. He was raised on the Uintah Ouray Indian Reservation and for a brief time in San Francisco. He was very proud of his Indian Heritage. Dad loved to reminisce and tell stories about his childhood and growing up on the Basin. There are many memories we all have of visiting this area that meant so much to him. He returned to Salt Lake City, where he graduated from West High School.
Ty joined the Air Force and attended basic training together with his older brother Don. He left basic training before he had the opportunity to serve his country due to a previous skiing accident. While home, he decided to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was called to serve in the New York, Eastern States Mission. Once again, this previous injury changed the outcome of serving the Lord and the people of New York.
Ty married Vivian Kay Meier on April 20, 1963 in Richfield, Utah. They were later sealed for time and all eternity on April 20, 2004 in the Jordan River Temple. They started their married life outside of Utah. In that time, they had the first four of their seven FABULOUS kids.
Ty accepted one of his fondest challenges early in his married life. He managed and ran multiple Boys’ Ranches with Vivian while living outside of state. He was a counselor and loved working with the boys. Ty and Vivian took their family back to Utah where they added three more kids to complete their family.
Dad went to work at Kennecott where he later retired after working many years. Following Kennecott, he went to Utah Technical College where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He went on to work at Hill Air Force Base as a civil engineer and retired after 20 years.
He was very involved with Ute Conference Football where he was the President of the league. He enjoyed these years with the boys, especially because he was able to watch his own sons play football. Dad was extremely proud of his family. He loved attending and watching his kids and grandkids in all kinds of sports and activities. He loved the outdoors…anything to do with being in the mountains, desert, or the wild. Dad enjoyed to hunt, fish and camp. He always loved to tell the story about “THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY.” This gave him quality time to spend with his loved ones and many memories were made.
Family was THE most important thing to dad. He was not afraid of working hard and was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. Thanks for instilling these great qualities in the lives of your family.
Ty is survived by his wife, Vivian; kids: Mindy Brey (Jim), Tyanne Peck (Darin), Kent (Becky), Alesha Colledge (Jared), Klayton (Rachelle), Taylor (Jodi), Katy Bennett; lots of grandkids; many great grandkids; and sister, Karon Knighton (Byron) and many extended family and friends. He will be missed by all of them.
He was preceded in death by his two sons, Kreg and Tawannee; his brother Don and his parents.
We would like to thank Canyon Hospice for the loving care and the help they provided so we were able to spend more special moments with our dad.
