This wonderful man cared so very much about his students.  He had the energy and, fortunately, he had TIME in the mid-to-late '70s to bring personal contributions to his classes -- like his "ham" radio system!  It was fun to drive down Beach Boulevard over the years and occasionally see the license plate that read the same as his call sign -- WA6 BDT -- and every time I saw it I remembered his very engaging classes.  When he brought to life the political cartoons, Mr. Garland opened my mind.

The last time I saw him was about three years ago when my nephew was receiving a high-school award.  Our eyes met across the aisle but I was too shy to walk over and thank him, knowing he wouldn't remember me among all the thousands of lucky students who knew him.

Thank you, Mr. Garland.

Sad to learn that Mr. Garland has passed away. What has not passed away is my respect for this man.  I sat in his classes nearly forty years ago. The critical and analytical skills I learned from him prepared me for college and are with me today. I know that he must of touched many lives and I doubt that he would have remembered me, but I remember him well. Thank you Mr. Garland.
