Edmundo Carmona Tan, age 86, passed on August 23, 2026. Born in Baggao, Philippines, in 1939 to Elpida and Francisco, Edmundo Carmona Tan grew up alongside his younger siblings, Lolita, Roy and Geronimo. During high school, he studied under Jesuit priests, whose focus on discipline and scholarship helped foster his lifelong love of reading and history, as well as an enduring interest in basketball.
In 1965, Edmundo earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Mapua Institute of Technology. Soon after, he married his childhood next-door neighbor, Eleanor Cuevas Co. Together, they shared 58 years of marriage, building a life as they immigrated to California and raised their family.
Edmundo worked as a civil engineer before taking the step to start his own firm, STO Design Group, which specializes in aquatecture and engineering. He led the company for many years until his retirement in 2024.
Edmundo and Eleanor raised their three children in Fountain Valley. He warmly welcomed his children's spouses into the family and especially cherished his role as a "Lolo." A favorite family tradition was buying several cakes so everyone could sing "Happy Birthday" to the grandchildren, whether or not it was anyone's actual birthday - a quiet, playful reflection of his joy in having the family together.
Throughout his life, Edmundo maintained a deep interest in history, books, and classical music. As his eyesight weakened, he continued enjoying stories through audiobooks. He remained a faithful Lakers fan and always looked forward to spending time with his cousins over meals and shared stories. While he had a strong mind and could be stubborn at times, that same quiet determination helped him care for his family and build a meaningful life.
Edmundo is survived by his wife, Eleanor; his children, Alexander, Larissa and Geraldine; their spouses, Mharacris, Patrick, Dawit and; six grandchildren, Olivia, Nina, Gideon, Kidane, Blake and Isabella; as well as his extended family, friends and colleagues. He will be fondly remembered for his warmth, wisdom and the everyday moments he made special.
