Emilia Lozano Zukowski
Emily Lozano Zukowski 90, passed away May 17th in Garden Grove California. She was born in Morenci Arizona on December 7th 1929. She was a miner’s daughter, to Tomas Lozano and Felicitas Lozano. She lived with her 5 brothers and sisters, Petra, Andrew, Natalia, Ignacio, and Thomas. Emily was the youngest of the 6.
Emily was 8 years old when they moved to Thatcher. Her 3 brothers went off to fight in WWII, and she wrote them weekly. She would receive letters back from her brothers, and treasured them dearly. All 3 brothers returned and have since passed. Andrew is buried in Thatcher Cemetery, Nacho in Safford cemetery with his wife Helen, and Thomas in Clifton cemetery with his wife Marie.
Emily graduated from Thatcher High school and met our father, Charles Zukowski while attending EAJC. They later married and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. In the early 50’s they moved back to Thatcher and bought a house in Safford with 3 daughters Linda, Debbie and Dianne. They later had 3 more children, all boys Chuck Jr, Andrew and Ron.
Emily was a hard-working mother of 6, worked at JC Penney’s on Main street for years selling shoes, and even found time to help make drapes for the Catholic church during Easter. Her husband Charles, a WWII wounded veteran who served under Patton, was active in the church and worked at Longs Furniture.
In 1967 they moved to California where she continued to work at JC Penney and raise her children. Her oldest daughter Linda married and moved to Oregon. In 1969 they moved briefly to Missouri, where Debbie, one of her daughters, married and remained. They moved back to California in 1973 and that is where she remained until her death. 3 more children married, Dianne, Chuck and Andy, where later Chuck moved to Colorado. Her husband later died in the early 90’s. Emily’s visits were frequent to Thatcher to visit her Mother and her brothers until her passing; she loved to climb the hills of Morenci and was an avid rock hound, always collecting more rocks and stones than she could carry.
Emily is survived by her 6 children, Linda, Debbie, Dianne, Chuck Jr, Andy and Ron. Grandchildren, Michael, Michelle, Wayne Jr, Nikki, Chuck Jr, Daniel, Ashley, Sam, Vinnie, Chris and Rachael, and Great-Grandchildren, Nicole, Cody, Summer, Peyton, Brock and Hannah. Mom will be flown to Thatcher Arizona, where she will be buried next to her parents and eldest brother. Viewing will be held at 9am on June 4th at Vining Funeral followed by the funeral services, at 10am. Committal will follow at the Thatcher Cemetery
