He was born in Astoria, New York and grew up in Washington, D.C., the son of Greek immigrants. George attended Duke University where, having been fascinated by airplanes, he studied aeronautical engineering. Upon completing his studies, George drove across country to southern California to work for Douglas Aircraft as an engineer, specializing in hydraulics and landing gear for the DC9 and DC8. While there he became friends with another engineer of Greek descent named Gus Lackerdas who introduced George to his future wife, and Gus’s sister, Coula Lackerdas.
Coula and George married on September 21, 1958, purchased their home in Westminster, California and started their family with the birth of their first child Byron in 1959. Their second boy, Harry, came two years later followed by their daughter Tina in 1967. George’s career in aerospace was interrupted for several years before he returned to his profession with Northrop/Grumman. The apex, and pride of his career was working as an engineer on the B-2 bomber project where he played a key role in the final design of the leading edge of the wing of the B-2. A man of firm opinions regarding his work (and mostly everything else), George boldly confronted the B-2 design team by telling them that the wing design was so flawed that he told them that “I could knock it down with a chicken”. Realizing that he was correct, they set him to work, and he happily completed his task thereafter remaining with Northrop until his retirement.
George’s favorite pastime consisted of reading at the beach while puffing away on his pipe. Anyone who knew George came to quickly experience and understand his direct and somewhat acerbic manner but appreciated his straightforward personality and knew that he could be counted upon when needed by friends or family. He is survived by his daughter Tina, son Byron and five grandchildren.
A funeral service for George will be held Wednesday, October 4, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 405 N. Dale St., Anaheim, CA 92801. Interment will follow, at Westminster Memorial Park 14801 Beach Blvd. , Westminster, CA 92683
