Born in Sayre, Oklahoma, in August of 1929, Jim’s early life was marked by both hardship and deep family bonds. After losing his mother at a young age, he was helped along by his two older sisters, Larine and Maxine. However, one of the most influential figures in his childhood was his grandfather, James R. “JR,” affectionately known as “Uncle Jimmy.” Jim adored him and took great pride in his grandfather’s legacy, including his participation in the historic Land Run of April 17, 1889, and his service as the first sheriff of Beckham County, Oklahoma.
Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. His service, while short, was an important chapter in his life and one he carried with quiet dignity.
Education was a point of great pride for Jim. He attended Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and earned a college degree, becoming the only one among his siblings to do so—an accomplishment he valued deeply.
He built a long and successful career in real estate, dedicating over four decades to Shapell Real Estate, where he worked from 1960 until his retirement in 2006. His work ethic, integrity, and personable nature earned him respect and lasting relationships throughout his career.
Jim married Maria Danitza in October 1963 in a civil ceremony in San Diego, California, followed by a church ceremony in Mexico that December. Their marriage began after just three months of knowing one another—and, as family fondly remembers, with only a limited shared language between them—proving that love, determination, and a little bit of faith can overcome even the smallest communication barriers.
He was a devoted father to his children: James, Rodney and Danitza. He was also a cherished father-in-law to Rachel and Daniel. Jim carried both great love and great loss in his life. He was preceded in death by his son, James, who passed away in 1984 at the age of 19. He was also preceded by his siblings: Laurine Rose, Maxine Harris, L.G. Richerson, and Glennis Cagon.
Jim’s legacy continues through his grandchildren, who brought him immense joy: James, Matthew, Mia, Makayla and Dominic.
Jim will be remembered as a man of strength, dedication, and deep love for his family. His life reflected perseverance, pride in his roots, and a lasting commitment to those he loved. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, quiet strength, and enduring family values.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 6th at Westminster Memorial Park & Mortuary. Burial will follow with a reception to conclude the celebration of a beautiful life lived.
