Born in Stillwater, Minnesota on October 26, 1922 to Frank J. Schaffer, Sr. and Seraphia Leif Schaffer, Margaret was the eldest of their five children. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, she traveled to Los Angeles to pursue her MBA. It was while student teaching at UCLA she met her future husband, Charles Francis Jasper. They were married in 1951, making their initial home in the Los Angeles area before moving to Westminster, in Orange County, to raise their three children. Charles and Margaret were married for 48 years, until Charles sudden passing in 1999.
Over her lifetime, Margaret donated her time and energy to organizations she believed in, holding leadership positions with the League of Women Voters, Girl Scouts, Friends of the Library, and others. A lover of books and education, she supported many causes, especially those that offered young or disadvantaged people opportunities for a better life.
She was especially proud to have worked as a financial aid officer offering grants and low cost loans to students wishing to attend vocational school. In mid-life, she returned to college to earn her teaching credential. She lived her life authentically and modestly, saw only the good in people, and faced her own declining health stoically, optimistic that “tomorrow will be a better day”. A role model for many, she was known for her intelligence, independence and compassion. To her children, she was a wise, kind, patient, supportive and loving mother.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Charles Jasper, parents Frank Sr. and Seraphia Schaffer, brothers Frank Schaffer Jr. and David Schaffer, sister JoAnne Brown, brothers in law Frank Brainard and Dick Brown, and nephew Steve Schaffer. She leaves behind her three children Larry Jasper, Karen Golin, Linda Jasper, and son in law Steve Golin. She is also survived by her sister Harriett Brainard, sisters in law Joan Schaffer and Ann Schaffer, many nephews and nieces, and other closely held friends, neighbors, and associates. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
