“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
As a young man and new Christian, this was Phil’s favorite Bible verse. When we got married, these were the words that he leaned on so very many times. When he had no job, he trusted God. When finances seemed so very insufficient, he trusted in the Lord. Then came children, and the strength that he relied on through raising our boys came from the Holy Spirit and these wonderful scripture verses. As life progressed and he was truly rooted in the Word of God and in his faith, another verse became his “life’s verse.”
“But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.” Acts 20:24
Phil clung to this verse as we began to move into ministry, especially as we began going out on the mission field. We never had the money for a mission trip, but God always provided. Phil knew that he could count on the faithfulness of God. We had many fun adventures and have so many amazing stories of all that God did while doing this work. It was Phil’s great joy and privilege to testify of the Gospel of God - to share the Good News. As physical challenges changed the trajectory of his life, it was difficult, but he was determined to finish his course with joy. I have a precious picture that I will always treasure. It is of Phil studying his Bible while in his hospital bed at home. What a triumph he had through Jesus! I am sure that he is so happy in his new heavenly home. Well done, thy good and faithful servant.
