Great times continue - Love you - See you soon   :)

I have recently returned from a trip by car to the west coast. My niece was married in Vancouver on July 22, and in any case it had been a long time since I had been across the country by surface transportation. The last time was In 1976 when I traveled west to east from Vancouver to Halifax on a bicycle. On my return journey by car from July 23 to 30, I followed my 1976 route. I went through Creelman before seven in the morning on Saturday, July 28.

On my bicycle trip on 1976, I kept a journal, and I see in it that I pitched my tent in a little town park by Creelman late in the afternoon because it looked like rain at the time. Saskatchewan and Alberta provided rudimentary free tenting sites at the time. After I ate, the sun started to shine so I went for a walk around Creelman. Here's a transcript from my journal.

"While walking into town I met a kid who was walking in the opposite direction toward the park. He had heard that there was a girl's softball game there. He was wrong though, the diamond was under about a foot of water. When I told him about that he turned around and we walked together into town. We went to his place and had coffee. His name is Delbert. His father sells farm equipment in Fillmore. I didn't get to meet his family, unfortunately, because they were not in when we were there. We went in search of the softball gave after coffee. Delbert had some things to say about the local school that I found amusing. We passed and old brick structure of 1915 vintage which now houses grades one to four. That was the "small" school. Then we passed a more modern structure that looked like a two room slice from a modern school in the suburbs. "That's the big school", said Delbert. I watched the girls softball game for a while, when I wasn't swatting mosquitoes. They sure did take it seriously"

My notes go on to mention that I took some photos around Creelman, including one of a window on a derelict house that Delbert told me was never used again after its occupant died.

Unless Delbert Murray Blackburn is not the same Delbert as I was talking to, I had the honour of making his acquaintance when he was 16 and I was 25. Had I gone looking for Delbert a few months ago, I might have been able to ask him in person if he remembered meeting a cyclist in 1976. My Condolences to all at Delbert's passing. Though my acquaintance with him was brief, it was indeed a pleasure.

We were so saddened and shocked to hear to the sudden loss of Delbert. I remember him as a friendly guy. When I saw him at the General after his heart surgery his thoughts were of his Mom- he didn't want to worry you! Our thoughts are with you all during this difficult time.
