Kater, Eileen Olive passed away peacefully with her children by her side on Friday, October 30, 2015 at the age of 80 years. Eileen was predeceased by her parents, Cecil and Helena Knibbs; the father of her children, Richard Kater; brother, Melville Knibbs and brother-in-law, Leo Major. In Huntoon, Saskatchewan on October 22, 1935 Cecil and Helena, along with their young son Melville, welcomed twin daughters, Eileen and Phyllis. Eileen was raised on a farm just outside of Viewfield, Saskatchewan where she completed her elementary school at the Viewfield Country School. She continued her high school courses at Benson High School. Before her marriage Eileen worked at the Manitou Beach and Mineral Spa. In 1954 Eileen married Richard Kater who she later divorced. When she was first married Eileen worked first at the South Hill Confectionary and later as an aide at the Weyburn Union Hospital until the birth of her first child. At that point Eileen retired to become a stay at home wife and mother to a family of five children including two sets of twins. Eileen moved from Weyburn to Goodwater where she lived until her divorce. During the time in Goodwater she worked as a post office clerk, a gardener and greenhouse operator and worked at the polling booth for several elections. After her divorce she moved to Weyburn where she remained until her passing. During her lifetime she enjoyed many activities like curling, golfing, camping, fishing and gardening. Eileen loved both country and gospel music and many hours were spent playing tunes on her chord organ. Talented in many ways she loved to crochet, knit and paint with artex. Baking was one of her passions and she made many cookies, pans of fudge, homemade chocolates and jams and jellies. Eileen was an avid fan of baseball and a highpoint in her life was a Blue Jays game she attended in Seattle with her son. Other trips taken were to Reno, Las Vegas, camping expeditions to Jan Lake, and North and South Dakota. Eileen was a bingo and card player and enjoyed most board games. She volunteered at the Weyburn Museum, where she spent many hours cleaning the silver collection. Eileen was active at the Weyburn Royal Canadian Legion. She generously sponsored needy children overseas and loved to volunteer at the Goodwater Fowl Suppers. Eileen was a very loving, generous and giving person who loved flowers, nature and animals. She was known for her giggling fits and had a very quick wit and contagious sense of humour. To quote her one son "she was a young soul." She was a hardworking family oriented woman who would give you the shirt off her back. She will be missed by her family and many friends. The family of Eileen Kater wishes to express gratitude and thanks to the 3rd floor nursing staff, Dr. Bigland, and Dr. Lenferna at the Weyburn General Hospital. Eileen will be forever remembered by her children: Debbie Kater (Grant Rubin) of Weyburn, SK, Lorne Kater of Vancouver, BC, Linda Kater of Regina, SK, Barry (Madeleine) Kater of Devon, AB and Brian (Jeannine) Kater of Weyburn, SK; grandchildren, Derek (Elvera) Kater, Amanda Hanson, Kayla and Brett Kater, Owen, Bret and Logan Noskey, Paige and Reid Kater; great grandchildren, Lily Grigoropoulos, Ellyot Kater; sister, Phyllis Major; sister in law, Alva Knibbs and special friends, Renee, Elmer and Elaine as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
