Born on October 4th, 1928 to Simon and Mary Kot of Weyburn, Helen was the fourth of nine children and her early life was that of a prairie farm girl raised during the depression in McTaggart, Saskatchewan. She attended high school in Weyburn and graduated having been awarded the Governor General’s medal for academic proficiency in her senior year. After a brief career in banking of which she noted “those that you think have money do not and those that are dressed very humbly are rich.” She married a local McTaggart farmer, Carl Schultz, on June 21st, 1949. Carl and Helen went on to have seven children; Lawrence (b.1950), Bryan (b.1952), Kevin (b.1955), Mark (b.1957), Carla (b.1960), Garth (b.1962) and Tim (b.1965). In addition to raising the family, Helen also belonged to the Catholic Women’s League; first at St. Joan of Arc parish in McTaggart and later at St Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church in Weyburn. She was very active in the church community volunteering as minister of the Eucharist and helping at mass at Tatagwa up until recently. She also worked for the Federal Government as a Census taker in 1971. She worked for social services helping young mothers as a parent aid. Helen loved to bowl and participated in the Weyburn Friday evening league and golden age league in which she and Carl belonged. She also later belonged to the Tuesday afternoon woman’s league and bowled in out of town tournaments. She remained an active bowler throughout her life with the final pin dropped in September of 2014. Helen and Carl retired to Weyburn in the fall of 1988. During this time Helen enjoyed the company of family, friends and the arrival of 16 grandchildren. She was an active volunteer at the Wheatland Senior’s Centre, and a regular Wednesday night whist player for years. She was a member of the auxiliary of the Weyburn Special Care Home and volunteered to take shut ins out for coffee through home care. Volunteering was an important part of Helen’s life after “retiring”. Helen’s vacation time consisted of a trip to Victoria to visit old high school friends; a tour of the Maritimes with her siblings; a sisters’ only trip through eastern Canada; and trips to Michigan to visit grandchildren.
